This will seem odd, given how old this post is, but some things are never too late to be said. Just because I have a Science degree doesn't stop me from becoming a writer, you aren't too old to pursue the things you want to do, but if you stop yourself, you always will be too old. Research what you want to do with writing and take a year or two to get those skills.
I also have to say I admire you for taking D&D and subverting the usual course of events by making it political and interesting, it's the sort of game I'd always prefer to play over a straight-out dungeon crawl and I've never really understood the attraction of calculating stats and making yours bigger than the other thing's wherever possible.
I'd also recommmend you read Jennifer Fallon, if you haven't already especially the Second Sons Trilogy, which is full of politics and also Anne Bishop's Black Jewels trilogy which covers some interesting aspects of politics most fantasy books won't go near, like how sex can be used as a weapon, just to warn you if that isn't your thing.

Other than that, Hello.
