Work at Fluor

Apr 18, 2006 19:24

Day 1
6:30 AM - Arrived early since overestimated traffic a wee bit too much. Got badge done, and then sat and waited for an hour.
7:30 AM - Orientation lady arrives, promptly on time (yay!), and we go through orientation about the do's and don'ts at Fluor. We also get a nice confusing tour around the complex. Whomever designed it was crazy. I saw people who've been there years getting lost. I have a decent sense of direction thankfully, so I'll manage. Anyhoo...moving on. >_>
9:45 AM - Orientation ends, now orientation lady calls department supervisors to fetch all of us new hires. I'm an exception because I was a new graduate though, so I got sent to HR to talk 'for 45 minutes' with the person in charge of new graduates.
9:55 AM - So 10 minutes later I'm waiting for my department head who was called to pick me up since I got done so fast...
10:30 AM - So someone finally comes pick me up, and goes take me to my project supervisor. Apparently at Fluor, they firmly believe the best way to train someone to swim is to throw him into the deep end of the shark-infested pool with steaks hanging off him...
10:40 AM - So project supervisor isn't around. I get dragged around a maze of cubicles and deposited into an empty one after what seems to be a lot of thought from the guy who picked me up. "Your project supervisor should show up sooner or later..."
10:41 AM - Browse cubicle. Desk, chair, desktop, phone, piece of paper. Boot desktop. Ask for login ID/password. Look at piece of paper. 'Call Doug at XXXX'. Grab phone. Phone does not seem to work. Pick-up guy fools around with it, looks at it strangely, and says he'll call to get someone to fix it.
10:45 AM - I get brought a trash can from maintenance. No working phone though.
10:47 AM - Department supervisor shows up, says a few words about being a new hiree and what he expects, takes off. I still have no phone or computer access.
10:55 AM - I go to another cubicle, use phone there, call Doug. He's not there. I leave a message.
11:15 AM - I'm getting hungry, so write a note in my notepad for Doug. As I rip piece of paper and grab my lunchbag, Doug arrives. He sees lunchbag, correctly deduces I'm about to go to lunch, and gives me paper with login ID/password and tells me to go right ahead to lunch and he'll walk me through everything later.
12:00 PM - I return from lunch. Thankfully, Doug left login with me. He never does show up to walk me through stuff. Just as well. I figure it out on my own easily enough, and it gives me something to actually do until project supervisor shows up. IRC/AIM aren't allowed sadly. I can at least go to the SR page though.
3:00 PM - Project supervisor shows up. Essentially gives same speech as department supervisor, but at least then tells me that he has nothing for me to do since the project I was assigned to doesn't have the simulations done yet and the work he'd be giving me involves using simulation results. He does take me to the library and tells me to check out two books that he believes might help by the time work starts...in about two weeks or so. And we'll probably be starting with overtime hours around then too because he was supposed to get the simulations this week so they're behind schedule. -Boy- I wasn't kidding when I made the pool analogy earlier.
3:30 PM - Return from library, start reading. I can't do much with my computer besides check my email sadly, because I require my employee ID to do those things. I shouldn't be getting -that- until wednesday or thursday. Ugh...
4:00 PM - Meet up with Quincy, the guy who referred me to the job. Cool guy. I suspect he's a clone of Hal. Except for the missing hat, they're almost twins, I think. They also talk/act very similarly. It was cool yet also eery/creepy. Talk for 10 minutes, then he has to go back to work and I thus gotta go back to readin'.
5:00 PM - Call dad asking if he's on his way. He tells me 10 more minutes.
5:40 PM - Dad arrives, blames traffic. I'm not sure if his lateness is fully due to traffic or not, but traffic -is- kinda sucky.
7:30 PM - Arrive home. Eat Dinner. Go read fanfiction to relax.
8:30 PM - Zonk out.

Day 2
7:05 AM - Arrive at Fluor. Better today. Didn't wake up at 5:00 AM (5:45 AM instead), and didn't have to deal with traffic too much. 5:45 AM is a good wake up time apparently, since I'm supposed to get to work around 7:15. Check email. No employee ID. As expected. Break out book and read.
11:00 AM - Well god bless...with a chime, my employee ID is now available. Change all my default passwords (besides email and login which I already could), and start making changes to my account (including setting up direct deposit) and seeing what I need to do.
11:30 AM - Go eat lunch. I now know where the floor microwaves are, so I don't have to go down to the cafeteria to use the microwaves there to heat my lunch. I eat at my cubicle and go look at fanfics and SR forum.
12:15 PM - Download PE 100, which is this comprehensive tutorial/exam/course for new hires. I needed employee ID to do so. Install, and find I need a project code as well. Thankfully, I am prepared and dial the number of the department head and ask. I start the tutorial. For reference, this thing is supposed to be done over the course of 4-6 months.
5:00 PM - Done with 3 of the 15 PE 100 modules and head home.
6:15 PM - Home, dinner, and a bit of a mini-nap in bed.
6:45 PM - Log on to IRC. Will probably zonk out in about an hour or so from now.

Overall Impression: Bored to tears, and the morning wake-up shift from 8/9AM'ish to 5:30AM'ish sucks. I hope those simulations get in early, so I don't have to deal with overtime and have something to do...

On my work schedule:
week 1 - Mon-Thurs 7:15am-5pm, Fri 7:15am-4pm
week 2 - Mon-Thurs 7:15am-5pm, Fri "day off"
repeat

I have been assured that weekends are never work hours even during overtime unless we want to come in during those days. The off day friday does get grabbed during overtime though.

So essentially, neither Wasteland nor Bloody Fields is gonna be a problem for me, though Weekly D&D I'll only be able to make every two weeks as is, and during certain times of the years I won't be able to even then.
