DIY Cardboard hack - smartphone stand

Oct 10, 2014 09:33

Late last night I wanted a little actionable, tractable task and I have been on a custom box-making spree so I had cardboard on my mind. Since I now use my smartphone for videochats I need a stand for it. Both the cute little conference schwag I got for propping up phones and the ad-hoc prop-up-on-random-objects method had failed me recently, so I decided that a cardboard-hack smartphone-stand was in order. Besides, it's not like if I failed that the cardboard would be a big loss.

Behold, my enhanced DIY smartphone-stand cardboard-hack.

It was pretty fun. I was going to just prototype it at first which is why I used damaged cardboard, but once I got going I didn't feel like redoing it with fresh cardboard. I really should have since enhancing a non-ideal base product (ie adding the bamboo skewers) is of questionable wisdom. Adding the bamboo skewers also seemed a little overkill since they had to be cut and sanded. I kept thinking of that phrase "can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear", but the bamboo skewers were destined to be thrown out anyway. And I wanted the extra stability that ridges give but didn't want to compromise on adjustability. And it was fun. :-)
