The
Wall Street Journal reported today that Walmart, in an attempt to boost flagging sales, has decided to expand it's sale of longarms and ammunition to nearly half of its 3,600 stores in the U.S.. The retail giant is listed as being the largest single vendor of firearms and ammunition in the country. Walmart has stated that most of the stores who will receive the weapons and ammunition are in 'rural areas'.
Comment: If one assumes that the reason for the decision is solely due to economic concerns, it is worrisome. Walmart said they originally pulled the firearms in 2008 due to a decline in sales. If they expect that trend has reversed, then it begs the question as to what has changed in the last 3 years. There's $5 that I don't have which says it has naught to do with a resurgence in hunting. If one does not assume that the reason is solely capitalistic in nature, things get even darker. Any place where you can purchase weapons, ammunition and anti-government rhetoric....well...you do the math.
