Kirikou et la Sorciere

Hey. Hey, hey. Hey. Have you ever heard of Kirikou and the Sorceress before? Yes? Then join me in gleeing over how neat it is. No? Then, hey, read further if you're curious, because you should totally be curious. Asking why is important.

That's one of the lessons in Kirikou and the Sorceress, which already elevates it for me. I like a good story ( Read more... )

I saw this, or pieces of it, when I was very young, I think, and the way the breasts were drawn is still one of the things that sticks with me most, because they were all DIFFERENT -- some women had breasts pointed as sharp pencils, some women had full, round breasts that sloped the way unsupported breasts do, some women had nipples outlined in gold. It struck me. And the shape of Kirikou's head, as well -- I remember that viscerally. I should watch it again.

Psht. 98 does not equal very young! (grin) The movie DOES remind me very much of something from childhood, though. I just can't quite place what.

But is so very good. I feel lucky with movies lately.

This is probably why I somehow found myself watching The Ugly Truth today, one of the most horrible movies I've seen parts of in a while. Yuck.

Oh, I enjoyed that film very much! I discovered it by accident--by discovering Youssou N'Dour's theme song for it, and then discovering that there was a movie attached.

I loved the animation.

I discovered this the same way you did--as a recommendation because of The Secret of Kells--and was lucky enough that our library had a copy.

For the second time (in two days?) I'm reading a movie review of yours thinking, "Yes! Exactly so!" The movie is delightful and the details you picked out are so telling about its charms.

I also saw the second one, Kirikou and the Wild Beasts which is good but not quite as wonderful as the first, though definitely worth checking out if you liked the first one.

Have you seen The Secret of Kells? If you have, what did you think of it? Because -- I haven't. I've only been circling it like a hawk.

And, ohhh, good to know, re: Kirikou and the Wild Beasts.

I have seen it. I saw it once in the theater and felt compelled to buy it as soon as it became available. It is dramatically stylized, strange and lovely (but there's also some pretty dark violence, true to the time it was set in).

I suspect you will love it, once you're ready to land.

I saw The Secret of Kells in the theater, and it was incredibly entertaining. The art reminded me of Disney's Sleeping Beauty, with the heavy black lines and flat, bright colors. The characters were fun, and the storyline totally worked for me. Yes, at times brutally dark but really a lovely viewing experience overall.

Oh, and thanks for sharing this great folktale and the links! I had never heard of either, and I adore folktales!
