A concise review of that movie, Bright Star: what a brilliant. I love it, but quietly. I like the colors. I like how the colors aren't all too bright or too dull; I like how the sunlight looks natural. I like how, when there is no score in the background, there are commonplace sounds: birds singing, cutlery singing, rain singing, the purring of the

When I watched this, I couldn't believe it. All in a week, I went around collecting people to watch it with me, just so I'd have an excuse to watch it again. And, uh, I watched it by myself quite a few times too. All obsessed-like. I got some Barnes and Noble money for Christmas and bought it -- but haven't watched it since. Now my new temporary roommate, who is my former real roommate, expressed a desire to see it, so on Sunday I am going to dig it out of my storage unit.
I was already looking forward to it, but you just WHETTED MY APPETITE to screaming.
All of those things you said? Exactly! Precisely! With your usual acuity you have hit the nail right on the head!
It was especially wondering to watch "Perfume" again right after seeing Bright Star, to watch Ben Whishaw, all goblinend up and filthy, hunt down virgins and extract their essences. He was also beautiful as Ariel in the Tempest, but too... gussied up in CGI. He can make magic without all that crap. More magic, even.
But the little brother? Who never said a word? Was probably my favorite character. Or the mother, who also hardly spoke at all but looked Very Worried through most of it. Yes, the cats. And the little sister -- especially when her big sister would cuddle her or threaten to cut off her hair.
Oh, and my Gods Charles Brown. Oh, and... just everyone. Everything.
The actor who plays Charles Brown? I've only ever seen him in "Lars and The Real Girl" (another of my favorite movies). He has an amazing basement brother-to-brother scene in that one.
And on another note entirely but of interest: Have you seen PHOEBE IN WONDERLAND?
I'm telling you.
PHOEBE IN WONDERLAND.
Yes.

And oh, yeah. I loved the mother, too. I think it would've been really tempting to play her off as one note -- figure of society wot wouldn't let them just get hitched, or something. I'm glad that's not the route they went. Instead, she comes across as a really strong and compassionate mother-figure, without being the Improbably Rebellious and Careless of Society's Mores mother-figure, you know?
(grin) But yeah. As much as I loved it, totally not one I'll be recommending to EVERYbody.
Also, whoa! He was in Lars and the Real Girl? Who did he play? (Not ... Lars?) And Whishaw is ARIEL in the Tempest? HUH. The one with Helen Mirren? (Which I so o o o want to see - come out on DVD already silly movie).
Perfume is a movie I've had recommended to me over and over, but haven't yet watched. One day soon! Ha!
I hope your roomie likes Bright Star, though. So, so, so nice.

She'll love Bright Star. Am pretty sure.
Yeah. Whishaw's Ariel. But that movie is MADE by Helen Mirren. All the ACTORS are good, and it's very pretty, it's just not very... good. Cohesively. I almost blame Shakespeare. Shakespeare and an over-indulgence of "Lookit all this cool stuff I can do!" Worth the watch, though!
