In my experience, it takes a long time to form an opinion on The Mars Volta's music. I had to listen to Amputechture on and off for months before I suddenly loved it like no other album. No, love isn't the right word - I was hooked, addicted and enjoying every second. I listened to Tetragrammaton daily for weeks.
Now I've had about a month to digest The Bedlam in Goliath, which isn't very long, but I feel the need to write about the song that first struck me as interesting. Track nr. 3, Ilyena, comes after the loud introductory song Abernikula and the very satisfying Metatron. After Ilyena comes the short single, Wax Simulacra.
The that which struck me immediately about Ilyena were the verses at the end of the song. After a short but complete pause in the music, some very groovy drums kick in and Cedric's voice comes in like a creepy choir. I don't know whether they raised the pitch of his voice electronically or what, but the singing is uniquely creepy.
The first and longer part of the song has also grown on me now, and though parts of Ilyena are somewhat repetitive, I could listen to the song on repeat just to listen to the change in the song as Cedric sings "follow me tonight - follow me into oblivion"
Ilyena
When the chants have cycled,
How can I go wrong?
There will be no Eve for Adam
If your apples have gone, gone, gone, gone
I need a brand new skin
Incarnated debts
Incarcerated when
The deeds are left to purchase
If you could see
Where I've been
You'd touch the hand that's touching sin
Entity ingredient
A mass of blackened scapes begins
Cypher is filled with a blanket of clots
Taking everything I've got
Please let me in
I need a brand new skin
Incarnated debts
Incarcerated when
The deeds are left to purchase
If you could see where I've been
You'd touch the hand that's
Touching sin, entity ingredient
A mass of blackened scapes begin
Follow me tonight
Follow me into oblivion
If you could see where I've been
You'd touch the hand that's
Touching sin, entity ingredient
A mass of blackened scapes begin
I seem to hide in metal plates
Held together, alone, don't wait
Hide with me, identity
Until we've past due date
Can't spot through the lens
Bleeding through your sanctuary
Intention accident
Bleeding through your sanctuary
mars volta,
music
