Sat 5th and Sun 6th we spent driving the 24 hours. We stopped in Memphis and went to Graceland to see Elvis's house and we bought stuff. We also ate lunch at the BB King/Elvis Memorial Center. We spent the night in St Louis on the 5th and got on the road at about 9 a.m. Sunday. We arrived in New Olreans about 11:00 Sunday night.
Mon. 7th we went to our volunteer site with Volunteers of America. they bought us dunkin' donuts and gave us a speech about VOA's mission. We then proceeded to clean kitchens and bathrooms before lunch. VOA bought us fried chicken, pop, salad, and made us red beans and rice for lunch. After we ate we washed walls in preperation of painting them and the doors. We basically painted for the rest of the week. After volunteering on Monday we went back to the church we stayed at and two others and I cooked dinner (spaggetti, corn, and garlic bread). After dinner we went to Bourbon Street and did some site seeing in the French Quarter. We bought stuff and had fun times.
Tues. 8th after volunteering we went home and another group made mac & cheese and hot dogs for dinner, and we went back to the French Quarter. A group of us went to Ripleys Believe it or Not museum which was a ton of fun.
Wed. 9th was a good day because we only had a half day of working. We left VOA at noon and went to get ready at the church. We left the church at 1 and went on a swamp tour which consisted of a tour guide named Caption Gator. We saw real allagators and it was fun. We got to hold an allagator named Elvis. After the tour we went back to the French Quarter and had dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe. It was some good food and fun. We then proceeded to buy more stuff.
Thurs. 10th was our last night. We went to a families house for dinner because they had found out we were volunteering in New Orleans and were "very pleased" so they offered to cook us a homecooked meal if we were interested. They were really nice people with two sons, one of which they adopted from Haiti so I thought that was awesome because thats what I want to work with as a social worker. After dinner we split up into two groups again and some went on a horse carriage tour of the city and the rest of us went to sing karaoke at a bar called the Cats Meow. Couldnt have been more perfect for me, eh? Amanda and I sang "I will survive" at a bar on Bourbon Street. It was sweet. After the carriage tour we met up with the other group and they wanted to go home so they did and we stayed and bought more stuff and went to check out a 24 hour farmers market which turned out to be very lame and expensive.
Fri 11th and Sat 12th we spent on the road home. We stopped in St Louis for the night again and we went to see the Arch, which was pretty cool. I got car sick on the last day so that really sucked and everyone was pretty crabby. I was suprised that it took up until the last day for people to get sick of each other though so that was pretty nice.
Anyway, the entire trip was worth every second and I would recommend it to everyone. Theres a ton of stuff to do even when youre sober and you dont flash for beads!
Hope everyone else had a fun time off from school if it was your spring break.
