At World's End Review NO SPOILERS

Jun 02, 2007 00:45

I could go into excruciating details on how much I loved it, but that would spoil the movie and I WANT people to see it. I'll post posts with spoiler warnings for those that have yet to see it. Oh, when you see it-STAY AFTER THE CREDITS THERE IS AN AFTER CREDITS SCENE!

I will however give a vague review that hints at it's awesome-ness.

Now for the good part. From this point forward a number of abbreviations will be used:
CotBP= Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
(The first one)
DMC=Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
AWE=At World's End
PotC= Pirates of the Caribbean

Summary:
The East India Trading Company lead by Lord Cutler Beckett is threatening the freedom of the seas and pirates all around the world. The pirates must unite or perish, but pirates aren’t known for getting along…

Individual Plots-
-Elizabeth Swann wants Will Turner's forgiveness and to save Jack Sparrow from Davy Jones' Locker to ease her guilt about her kiss of death
-Will thinks Elizabeth loves Jack. (Communication problems!) Will wants to save his father from the soul stealer Davy Jones to do that he needs the Black Pearl.
-Jack wants freedom and his ship the Black Pearl…as always
-Norrington wants forgiveness for the wrongs he has caused.
What is right and what is wrong? That’s a question all of them struggle with…

Will all these threads come to a conclusion at the end of At World’s End? Only time will tell…

Serious-ness

The East India Trading Company is cruel. They have suspended due process, right to trial by jury, and other rights for anyone who associates with or is a pirate. They are greedy and evil. (And yes I think Beckett and Davy are smashing villains/characters. I would say with Barbossa in CotBP, Pirates has the best bad guys that I have seen in recent years.)

On the pirate side...Betrayals, criss-crossing, tough decisions, everyone has a reason for wanting Jack returned from the dead.

Comedy

Goat parrot, guitar, peanut. Those are four hints. While this movie is darker it has more comedy than DMC to balance it out. Pintel and Ragetti-the two comedy pirates return as do the two navymen, Murtogg and Mullroy who argued over whether the Black Pearl was real from CotBP. Scarlett and Gieselle return as well-Jack's lady friends from Tortuga.

Special Effects

It was much better than DMC. The special effects in the Maelstrom, in Davy Jones' Locker, Davy Jones and his crew were fantastic. They out did themselves. Kudos to Industrial Light and Magic the CGI wizards (this is the same company that did Star Wars Episode 1-3)

Action

There are multiple sword swinging battles, explosions, betrayals, secrets, a ship to ship battle in the middle of a swirling whirlpool, broken tea cups, chopped tentacles, brawls, deals made, splintering wood, the whole Jerry Bruickheimer trademark of action packed-ness.

Locations

The locations are diverse and if you're a fan of exotic locations there is plenty. My favorite bit was the glaciers. Whirlpools, spits of sands, crowded Asian island, glaciers, white deserts, supernatural ships, volcanic rock beaches, an island made up of shipwrecks, dingy brigs, ship shape...ships-all can be found within this movie's borders.

Scale of 1-10?

I give it an 8. CotBP would be a 10

Anything else?
No, not in this spoiler free post...Maybe in another post when I'll spoil the whole movie.
