Speedy Ships
I took it all. I took the awe in their eyes. I took their shouts of praise. I took the salty air from their lungs as they marveled at my fleetness. I was undisputed as the fastest ship in the Caribbean. I served his majesty the king, my country and my people in one of the greatest navies in existence.

I scoffed at the tales of a ship black as a pirate’s heart, captained by some myth of man, a seafarer’s fairy tale example of villainy. It did not exist. If it did no vile pirate ship could match the likes of me in a contest of speed. Not one.

Every humble seaside village and grandeur of a port, has heard my name. I’ve heard it spoken in whispers of dread, in shouts of fear, in lively sea shanties, in animated stories weaved by master storytellers. Aye, many tales have been told about me. I am the fastest ship in the Spanish Main. I serve no king, no country; I bow only to the sea.

I was once told of a vessel that claimed to be the fastest in the Caribbean. A ship that proudly flew England’s colors, a tale’s example of some wonderfully noble heroine. As if some arrogant naval vessel could match my speed! I think not.

I had been quite cross and vexed that week. First, I had been snatched and steered away from my port by some pirate and a young man who was the most incompetent sailor I had ever seen. Second, they brought me to the most horrible and indecent place, women were dressed most immodestly, men fought over bottles and rats ran free- not just the furry ones mind you. Third, I was crewed by the strangest assortment of people imaginable! So you would understand my reaction when I found an old, dilapidated ship on my tail. I haven’t even mentioned the fact that she was rolling out her guns.

I was quite impressed by this high-toned and fancy ship. She certainly was fast, she talked a bit too much for my liking, but I had to agree that I had never seen a better ship suited for her name. I certainly loved a challenge; I wouldn’t let her get the best of me.

I couldn’t believe it. There she was the ship I had thought was merely a myth. I caught a glimpse of her name as I was wrenched around to face her to give me the slightest chance at doing in battle, what I had failed in speed. I knew I could not win this one. How foolish I had been. I had believed a bunch of unintentional lies, inflated myself with their claims. I had allowed my own flaws and stubbornness to be my end.

Note:
Hm. You know looking over this is making me realize I haven't written anything on the Dauntless or any of the ships since this story was written quite some time ago. Tea and cookies for
commodore_lydia for reminding me of that. :D
I apologize to Will. When I wrote this I had no idea one day he'd be a Captain...
