I was at the corner store earlier this evening. I saw a couple of people getting some random things. They looked to be together, and it turned out to be father and daughter.
They were at the country paying when I walked up with my load of "stuff".
The man asked for my name, saying that he forgot it. I responded in saying that I don't recall ever giving it to him before.
It turns out that I probably hadn't, but that he lived two houses up the street from where I do.
I said that my name was Phil, and he introduced himself and his daughter "I'm Larry, and this is my daughter Nikita, or Niki"
I wasn't sure I heard it right, and looked at her "Nikita?"
She nodded kinda shyly.
"I guess you prefer Niki though, right?"
Her eyes grew bigger and she nodded quickly in that kind of "oh, gods yes" sort of way.
She looked to have been around 15 years old or so. Had a down played glam punk look to her.
I looked it up, and La Femme Nikita was released 13 years ago (this month). She might have been that old. Was flat chested, so might have been.
In any case, who names, their kid Nikita? Even if it was before the show was out, it wasn't a common name.
Here's something of interest, though. Nikita is actually a male Russian name (Никита), and yet most people in the western world associate it to females. The name comes from the Greek Niketas (Νικητας), which in turn is derived from the Greek νικη (nike) meaning "victory". So...
Nike the shoe brand means "victory" and this girl has a Russian male name, from the ancient Greek word for victory which now adorns the side of a shoe.
