Fandom: Fringe

A/N: This was one of the hardest things I have written in ages and it's less than 300 words! I rewrote parts of it like 4 or 5 times. But I had huge breaks between classes today so I figured I'd write something while watching the snow fall. It hasn't stopped snowing since noon! Pray for a snow day!

Title is from The Cave by Mumford & ( Read more... )

Brilliant opening lines:

The problem was never in running. It was in getting caught.

I feel like this is such a Peter sentiment too. He wanders and he wanders, and he's used to that, he's good at running from place to place and so yes that isn't the problem. It's getting caught -- whether it be by Big Eddie and his guys, a badass FBI agent who blackmails him into retrieving his father, or the woman he's fallen in love with.

And the "funny how things don't change" and "history repeats itself" lines were really gut-wrenching in that it seems to belittle the time he'd spent at Fringe division, if he looks back and says those things as if it was only a matter of time before he'd be running away from his father again, just running somewhere, anywhere. I think those statements just really portray the bitterness and pain Peter must be feeling, in that he'd found a reason to stay in one place but now looking back after he left that place too it's like he thinks to himself 'I should've known better. Things don't change.'

And I liked the "You almost wish it hadn't been so easy" because you can just tell how much it pains Peter to leave the world he thought was his own for the world that really is his. You can just sense the tension/conflict in him about where the heck he truly belongs.

I also really liked the "anger was your fuel" line because I really feel that's what is keeping Peter going. That is before the genius in him realizes he's "miscalculated" as you put it. It's a great insight into his mind, because that's really how the show has showed us how Peter's mind works, inputting all the data and accounting for all the variables in order to reach the most logical or rational conclusion. But some variables aren't founded in reason I guess you could say.

And I'm glad that you made sure to emphasize that while Peter's gut reaction was to be attracted to Olivia, even the other!Olivia, it was just because she looked like his Olivia...but upon closer scrutiny, it was clear to him that it wasn't his Olivia at all. Call me a biased shipper but I do think that -- despite there being more than one of everything -- this Peter and his Olivia do have a special bond, romantic and otherwise, that connects them in such a profound way and so the other!Olivia, despite being similar to his, just isn't the same at all.

Then I just loved the image of the speeding train because I could just feel the force of his ache, the longing in him for a person he'd run away from.

Poor Peter, learning the hard way. The force of love, the gravitational pull that one woman has over him, was definitely definitely not a variable he thought to account for.

Absolutely wonderful fic! Thanks for sharing!

yay!! I'm so glad you caught that. And I like to think that after awhile he won't be so upset about being caught. I think in some ways he's already let Olivia "catch" him and in that respect, it might be harder for him to let her go.

yes! it's such a gut-wrenching thought and I think it will be interesting once Peter finds out whether or not he will feel this way. I definitely think he will and will revert back to his old ways as a defense mechanism. Especially since I think he started running not only because of his father, but also because he never really felt like he belonged.

But some variables aren't founded in reason I guess you could say.

I definitely think this true. And as much as Peter I think tried in his past to put away his emotions, he is at heart a very emotional and caring person. So it will be interesting to see if he can really box himself up again.

well, I'd say I was a biased shipper too, but the writers have already proven how connected they are in more ways than one, so it definitely wouldn't surprise me if he met the other!Olivia and yet never felt that connection to her even if they are from the same universe.

Thanks so much for your comment! It truly made my night.
