bunsen_h here, posting for
mentisiterinvit...
mentisiterinvit has had another flare-up, apparently of the "usual" kind, on our way back home from Toronto. At present she's in the Kingston General Hospital, having been (technically) admitted, but waiting in the Emergency/Observation ward until a bed becomes available. We have been warned that this may take as long as several days; the hospital is "gridlocked".
I've got the use of her car, so commuting won't be quite as dire as it might be, but it will still present logistical problems; my current work task isn't something I can do remotely. Are any friends going to be in the area to visit her?
The woman who checked me in at the Kingston waterfront Holiday Inn sometime after 2:00 this morning went above and beyond the call of duty. She gave me the special "visiting someone in the hospital" rate, waived the parking fee, and said that I was checking in on Monday and that one night's room charges would take me to checking out on Tuesday, i.e. effectively an extra night's stay. It's the kind of thing that will very much incline me towards staying with them again when I visit the city. I must find out if there's some kind of program to give such employees the recognition they deserve.
Also: Apart from the lack of bed space,
mentisiterinvit has been getting much better care here than she usually has in Ottawa. They're giving her adequate pain control without difficulty, and they're taking her problem seriously. I suppose that that may be influenced by her having a tentative diagnosis and surgery already scheduled in Ottawa, but it's hard not to think that there are other factors involved.
She's got a bed now, and will be moving into it momentarily. Visitors will be welcome!
