Amusing trifles (but only secondhand cooking)

Things that have been amusing me in the midst of sleep-deprivation woe:

The brand of the cufflinks I was given for Christmas: Cuff Daddy

I'm rather partial to the song 'Red Hot Momma' but PB sings 'Red Hot Mammal'.

I'm a member of is the British Society of Gerontology, familiarly referred to in my workplace as 'the BSG'. But if you put 'BSG' into ( Read more... )

frivolity, sleep, books, singing

Unrecommendations for anything by Diana Wynne Jones should be treated with scepticism - very nearly all of her stuff is pretty good, and a fair amount of it is very good.

Ah but this was from someone who's a DWJ fan and whose tastes often align with mine. Actually, I do think the plotting and conclusion are less good than some of her other stuff, but I loved the premise and the monks.

Ah, late to the party, as ever. (Thank you, that's even better).

To be honest, if it's a banana ripening party, I think being fashionably late is a good thing. Also perhaps make your excuses and leave early.

Actually, I think I'm right in saying that bananas exude some kind of evil chemical (possibly one of those ending in ethel-something) that causes themselves and other nearby fruit to ripen over quickly. This means that they are often suspended on some kind of banana gibbet away from other fruit.

If you had good access to someone with some kind of training in chemistry then they might even know the name of the chemical in bananas (or if I'm entirely deluded).

Most UK bananas are transported green and ripened in special rooms using ethylene gas and controlled temperatures. It's a very technical process (which makes a mockery of people who want to eat natural raw foods)

BSG - I found that scene difficult too. Nothing else as bad as that... Overall very very good I think...
Although I wasted 1/2 hour today in 'Management in the Wider Environment' course trying to figure out how Gaia Theory (global harmony vs destruction environment type theory, in case like me you didn't know)might have a significant link to Gaius Baltar! Paul says it doesn't... I'm not sure. Cylons and Humans in harmony... Gaius as a link between the two? May be something. Surely a Media Studies paper in there somewhere at least!
