Several years ago, I worked on a system for displaying and semi-automating crew procedures for astronauts onboard the ISS. Our astronaut point of contact was Dan Barry, who went up on his third shuttle mission during that time. After the mission, he invited the development team to his house for BBQ and home movies and slides from the mission. A very cool man.
And very smart, too. He was an MD, and had a PhD in Electrical Engineering. He was also independently wealthy from various medical gadgets that he invented.
He retired a few years ago. And I just came across this article -- evidently,
he got bored with retirement.
