You're actually making perfect sense. I don't recall which interview with McAvoy I read but he mentioned that he if had his way in the sequel he'd like to see Charles being pissed off and angry about what had happened -- with Erik and Raven, his paralysis. He wanted to see that in between moment for Charles, the "what happened" between XMFC and what we eventually see in other films with Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen in their respective roles. I find myself curious about the same thing. What is that journey like for Charles? Yes he's idealistic but it's not like hasn't seen the darker side of life. Yet he maintains a certain optimism that can be over/under written in fics as naive when I don't think he is. His hopefulness is something pretty remarkable. So the question is how does he handle what gets dealt to him by the end of XMFC -- and I'd like to see him struggle and fight through it -- so that he gets to the point where he not only runs this incredible school but has re-established an adversarial/ally relationship with Erik that others don't get but the bond is apparent and certainly not going anywhere.

I had a conversation with a co-worker and he was a bit dismissive of Charles in XMFC and I said that Erik is the "flashier" role with his history and motivation, but that Charles is equally compelling to me in his own right and as the necessary counter to Erik.

And now I'm going on and on :-)

there's a difference between being optimistic and naive, of course, and i just do not think that somebody who can read minds could possibly be so clueless.

you are awesome. :D
