The last case had been terrible, and Lisbon had been pushed over the edge by feelings long believed buried that had resurfaced in her with a passion. She was sick and tired, her headache was killing her; she just wanted to go home and curl in a ball in the darkness of her bedroom, even if she knew it wasn’t unhealthy. Too bad she knew she couldn’t do it, not with that much paperwork still to do.
In that moment, Jane entered without knocking, smiling all happy and satisfied. He chuckled, looking at her. “What is it, Jane?” she asked, sighing. She didn’t need any more troubles right now, and she feared whatever he had in mind- and that grin wasn’t promising anything good.
“Your mother read you The Chronicles of Narnia, and you still do it, every now and then. Even if it makes you a little sad.” He went at her back, and started massaging her shoulders. Lisbon leaning in, eyes closed, getting lost in his voice and his movements. This newfound intimacy was still a bit awkward at times, but Jane knew her like nobody else did. He always knew what he was supposed to say and when. “You know, Narnia is a real place.”
She grunted, still at closed eyes, even if small tears left them.
“I swear” he chuckled, and kissed her head, quickly and sweetly, inhaling her unique scent. “Can’s you see the valley underneath you, with a silver river running through rocks and grass the color of emeralds? And in the distance, the mountains. So high they touch the sky, snow-kissed… can you see all those magical creatures flying in the wind, Teresa? Playing with the golden leafs… and at you side, here he is, Aslan the Lion… can you smell his fur, feel it, warm and soft, beneath your fingers?”
She nodded, and sighed-this time out of contemned- and Jane gave her a last rub, and a parting kiss on her hair. He covered her with his jacket, and turned off the computer and the lights, leaving her to sleep and to dream, her mind in a world where Narnia was real.
