Did you really believe this war would end wars?

So I need some help.  I have this idea, which is really an ephemeral, less than half-formed thing, for a story.  And it is a story about World War I, which as most of you have probably gathered by now is a war I am completely and utterly fascinated by.  However, fascination does not necessarily mean I'm well-prepared for such a project ( Read more... )

Good luck with it! I would recommend checking the History section of your library (typically the 900s if they're using the Dewey Decimal System). I hope it goes well! (P.S. We should hang out soon!)

It is indeed the 900s. I have a couple of books from the library as of this week. It's just I don't really know where to begin. Because just understanding the war doesn't get me understanding society, or culture, or what people wore, or any number of things, and aaagh!!!

And yes, we should.

Are you thinking about the war at home or on the front? (or a mixture of both?) Rilla of Ingleside had an interesting (if romantisized, being a kid's book) view of the effect of war at home. (It's also the first book that I ever remember making me cry. This boy went away to war at the beginning of the war. He had this dog that loved him very much. The dog went with him to the train station and refused to leave. For four years, the dog lived at the train station, waiting for the boy to come home. The boy's family fed him, but they could not get him to come home. When the boy came home, it wasn't his family's reaction that touched me, but the dog's...I'm a sucker for animal stories.)

hmmnn...Not much help, huh?

Home, and the front, and general daily life. And that is a very touching story about the dog. I never read Rilla of Ingleside when I was reading all those books as kid, so I will definitely check that out.
