Sky Forever Wide

It is cold and clear,
The night we go out to the park,
We go to see the sky.

Dark, and late,
And we are underdressed,
Huddling together the night we go to see the sky.

Skeletal branches from a single tree
Black out the stars, claw them darkly down,
Hide them from their brethren.

The night we go to see the sky
Our breath steams in the knife-cold air,
And the Milky Way is a spangled banner.

Beneath our feet, the grass is withered and brown,
The ground pitted and scarred,
And above us, unmistakable, is the Big Dipper.

I feel mouse small beside you,
The sky forever wide,
Breathless with awe.

A thousand stars, uncountable,
Shivering in your arms, speechless,
The night we go to see the sky.
