I have only 2 absolutely favourite movies: Wit and this. Wit is a movie that every Lit major and/or ardent fan of John Donne has to watch, for it really speaks about the relationship between literature and life and death. Like Wit, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly also speaks about these same issues, albeit in a much more aesthetic and modernist way, in the sense that you follow a stream of consciousness which develops along a non-linear progression of time (I feel). This film is not for everyone because it is very painful to watch, but assuredly, once you have seen it, you'll never really forget it. It touched and shook the very core of my soul.
To Jean-Dominique Bauby 1952-1997: You are legendary, like Donne.
