Today Was a Good Day

Today I went on an adventure.

When I was little, my parents would occasionally go wander around randomly, or at least take some novel route to or from wherever we were going anyway. At the time I was terrified that, I don't know, we'd never find our way home again. I hated those trips. These days, even though it only feels cheap since I'm not paying for the trip until later when I fill my gas tank, it's still nice to just get out and see what there is to be seen in my fair state.

Today, I really didn't have anything to do. I started the day by going to a bookstore and reading (not buying) some comics. I then decided to go to the gym. But that's pretty boring and it was a beautiful day, so I decided to instead go to Moore state park. I discovered it last year, and it's absolutely lovely. When I got near there, I decided I wanted to get lunch first, so I continued on Rt. 122. Rt. 122, once you leave Worcester, is pretty rural. It was quite a few miles until I hit a Subway. By that time, I had seen some dark clouds on the horizon, so I simply decided to follow the road. I'd rather be in my car than on a trail if it suddenly started to pour.

I like living in a mid-sized city like Worcester. Stores, recreation, and jobs are convenient to my apartment. Given all that, it's the economically and environmentally sound thing to do. But man, do I miss small old-fashioned downtowns and trees and fields everywhere. I really get nostalgic when I smell cow manure. 122 had a lot of all that. In fact, the area's far more rustic than my old home of Bolton MA or Clinton NY was. I saw some people skydiving, which is awesome. I ended up losing the highway in Orange (which isn't surprising because that's where it ends). I picked up Rt. 2, not really thinking about which direction I should take, and not really caring. I went west, brining me further from Worcester and further north, and passed over the French King Bridge. The bridge passes over the Connecticut River and is one of the coolest pieces of engineering on the state. The bridge itself is just gorgeous. White marble rails and pillars with eagles made before fascism was proven uncool. And the view... The view is breathtaking:

From there I moved on to a place called Turner's Falls where I saw a nature exhibit and walked a brief way on a nice bike trail they have there next to a canal and some old rundown mills. I like rundown mills. Somehow, they seem more folksy than signs if a vanished economy to me. I heard a frog and saw some Mormons.

On the way back I stopped to walk out to the center of the French King bridge. Awesome.

It was a great day. I haven't had enough of those recently, and next week I have a job interview I have little chance of actually scoring, but today was good.

I didn't even have to use my AK.
