For a year now, Jo and I have discussed the idea of dressing up and going out to a nice restaurant. The time finally came on the 20th, though we had to adapt the plan quite a bit! Originally, Kristin, Becky and Andrew were also going to go, but Kristin had a death in the family, and Becky and Andrew live a little further away, so they decided not to face the snow and long ride in (who the hell lives in Paris, Ontario?!)
That placed Jo and I in a bit of a freak-out mode. Andrew was going to drive us downtown, so we came up with all these alternatives and also possible was that we just wouldn't go. But we were adamant about Dress-Up Day! In the end, the three of us, Kris, Jo and I, went out together. And a fine time we had!
Kris drove us to the subway station in her car, and we hopped the trains the rest of the way, walking to the restaurant from the station. It was a short walk too, and the weather was much better than we'd thought. The restaurant selected was a French one, Le Papillon.
The restaurant is so nice, and the food was way better than we had anticipated. We shared a bottle of really good Muscadet and a plate of yummy escargot. As for entrees, I had to go for the filet mignon with mashed potatoes and mashed sweet potatoes. It also came with diced carrots and rutabaga, which was my first time having the latter. Jo had a delicious kona komachi fish special with foie gras (quite tasty!) and some veggie called
sunchoke, which none of us had before but all found it was good. Kris had traditional Quebecois dish, the tourtiere; it was quite good and surprisingly spicy!
We shared two desserts, a creme brulee and a banana crepe (with chocolate rum sauce! and French vanilla ice cream!)
All in all, a very satisfying meal. I definitely have to return and try one of their dinner crepes. We've also decided that we need to do more of these dress-up days, because in the course of research, we found seven other potential restaurants to try. Excellent!
Afterward, we headed back to Scarborough. On the ride to Jo's from the station, we got pulled over by the cops! We didn't know why, and Kris sighed, searching for the registration in the bundle of papers from the dashboard cubby-thing. Turned out, she wasn't doing anything wrong. We were all wearing our hoods in the car! I guess the officer couldn't see our faces or something, and thought this might be a cause for concern. Very peculiar, but amusing.
Back at Jo's, we decorated her Christmas tree with old school-made ornaments and a tonne of pepperment canes. Then because we decided that the wine didn't do very much for us and therefore we had to drink more, we had two shots before bed: Polar Bear and Swedish Berry. A tastebud explosion!
Then Jo's boyfriend Shawn decided it'd be a good time to call, so we spent an hour talking to him on speakerphone. Or rather, Jo spoke to him while I interjected occasionally. Got to bed quite late, and I wouldn't have it any other way at Jo's place!
Awesome night. Must do it again :D
