Ichigo was bleeding badly, but that wasn’t the problem. He had had worse injuries before. No, the thing that troubled him was the broken blade in his hand. Once more, he had failed to find the “real Zangetsu”, and time was running out, a fine and fast trickle of sand falling into the bottom bulb of the invisible hourglass.
“Damn it!” Ichigo cursed, a little less forcefully than he intended to; he was having difficulty catching his breath. Throwing aside the useless blade, he picked another at random. Too many choices, Ichigo thought, and too low a probability… But maybe I’ll get lucky with this one!
Old Man Zangetsu stood over him, his hair and cloak swirling in the nonexistent wind. “That was the twenty-third. Is that all?” he sneered. “You’re still not getting it, the thing you need to get on the other side of your limit. Come, one more time!”
The other side of my limit… eh? Ichigo mused as he raised his chosen sword to block Zangetsu’s incoming blow. Well, technically, for a limit to exist at a point, both one-sided limits must agree. So wouldn’t that make the other side of the limit… the same as the first side? And that gets me… Hang on, that gets me back where I started, when I was under my limit, does it not?
Enlightenment and confusion dawned simultaneously on Ichigo as the twenty-fourth sword shattered. While he finally understood what his teacher had been trying to explain for weeks, he still did not get how he was supposed to attain bankai.
Mentally smacking his forehead, he cleared away his muddled thoughts. Better not to think too much about it, before the reality of math crashed down and forced its way into his world.
