Title: Good Enough
Series: NANA
Characters: Nana, Hachi
Rating/Warnings: PG, very fluffy, tried out a different kind of writing, just a quick drabble, unedited and all that. Happy Nana day~ :3
Sometimes it takes a while to realize how temporary things in life are. Like that boy you met in high school, and swore every day you were going to get marriage once he was done with college, and you had a good job, and you'd live happily ever after. But what you didn't realize was that he'd lose interest like a normal teenage boy and find some other porcelain doll for his entertainment. Or that band you started, that you knew would make it to the top, and you'd live by singing forever. And while you did make it big, you eventually had to come down, and after a while you just went out of style.
Sometimes it takes a while to realize the things in life that will remain. The friends you'll still have, the apartment you'll still share, the view you'll still look out on every time the festival rolls around, the bed you'll lay in. And it won't really dawn on you until one day, when you're staring up at the ceiling lit dimly by the bright city lights.
"Hey, Nana..."
"Yeah?"
A pause.
A sigh. "What is it Hachi?"
"...It's nothing. Just...promise me you'll never leave me."
A chuckle. "Shouldn't it be the other way around? I sure hope my Hachi doesn't try to run away from home one day. Maybe I should tie you up here, just to be sure."
A thumb slides over the bare skin where a ring once was. "Okay, but only because it's you, Nana."
And in that moment, when your head is pressed against her chest just lightly enough that you can feel it gently rise and fall with each breath, and you can hear her heart steadily beating, that you'll realize that the temporary things really don't matter. It's the constant things that keep you going. It's the nights like this that you live for.
And that's good enough for you.
"Goodnight, Nana."
