Music sets the tone for many horror and paranormal films. From the classic creaking door (or coffin lid) to the iconic beats of the Jaws theme. it subconsciously puts us in a place where scary things happen. Unfortunately, it is often mashed together as an afterthought for many hunted attractions, events and even parties during the Halloween season. Lionsgate is helping remedy that deficiency by releasing the amazing soundtrack to The Possession, a “based on a true story” paranormal thriller set to hit theaters on 31 August 2012.

The tale of The Possession is not unfamiliar. When Em, the youngest daughter of Clyde and Stephanie Brenek purchases on antique wooden box at a garage sale, her parents did think much about it. It isn’t until Em becomes oddly obsessed with her new treasure and her behavior becomes increasingly erratic that they begin to suspect she is in the possession of a malevolent force or being of some kind. To their horror, they year their daughter has fallen prey to a Dibbuk, a dislocated spirit that inhabits and ultimately destroys it’s human host.

What is truly terrifying about this film is the electrifying score created by award-winning composer Anton Sanko. His masterful use of music, notable even in the trailer, possesses audiences, creating an atmosphere in which anything can happen and does…often with disastrous effects.

“I had the occasion to write everything from grand sweeping themes for  giant orchestra to an obsessive meditation on a single piano note,” Sanko said. “I wanted the score to be an integral part of the storytelling, yet still have a life of its own, using whatever means necessary to achieve those goals.”

Produced by horror master Sam Rami along with Robert Tapert and J.R. Young, The Possession is directed by Ole Bornedal. Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Kyra Sedgwick bring the script by Juliet Snowden and Stiles White to life.

The Possession soundtrack is available today, (28 August, 2012) exclusively on iTunes.if you’re looking for something new and different for a haunted house or just a Halloween party, it’s definitely worth checking out.

“Anton’s music once again evokes the pain of parents who are dealing with an immense struggle and facing the potential loss of their beloved daughter. His powerful score helps drive the many thrilling moments in the film as it floods your body with an array of emotions, from tension and depression to sheer terror,” explains Tracy McKnight, Head of Film Music for Lionsgate.
