Last Thursday, to stay in compliance with the
WARN act, my company has notified me that as of October 1, 2010 my services will no longer be required.
So the boom is finally falling. I received my notice a little early because I was going to be away all next week when all of the other notices are going to go out. Our managers have to deliver it to us in person so everyone is meeting with the boss to get a package. Everyone has to go even if you're getting laid off or not. That's not so bad, because that way you could decide how and when you wanted to tell your coworkers if you're going to go or stay. The managers themselves are going to find out Monday if they're getting let go.
Now, for the next two months both laid off and retained employees are going to be working side by side. Gonna be a fun time. :P
Most of the retained workers don't have that much of a reprieve. I hear there is another scheduled layoff at the end of the year, and another after that when the last flight lands. For me, it ends in October.
I think I've known this was coming for so long it really wasn't that bad to find out. For years we've been preparing for it, and this year has been filled with so many ups and downs I'm almost mentally exhausted. Now I know and can accurately plan around it. BTW, I'm taking the first week of October off.
Because of payload issues the final shuttle flights have been extended into 2011. Discovery is set to launch on 1 November, and the final flight of Endeavour is 28 February. That was supposed to be it, but hold on. A funding bill in the Senate commands a launch of the shuttle Atlantis if it is not used as a rescue ship no earlier than 1 June 2011. There is also funding for immediate development for a heavy lift rocket in there. So things may not be as over as they seem. It won't be Ares, because the bill calls upon using technology and plans from the former Ares program, but it'll probably be pretty similar.
So now attending school, and training classes is more in my focus. Also I'll concentrate a little more on my other job which is going to occupy me more next year anyway. However, it has taken me to some interesting places. Check the location tab.
