Ooookay, engineering class was all well and good, but this young (cute) teachery guy was totally explaining the pressure system all wrong. Claudia raised her hand and started talking, not waiting to be called on.

"Uh, yeah, I think like, it would be a lot easier to, uh... if you did it like... here."

Claudia jumped out of her seat and seized the pen from Zack's hand, scribbling illegibly on the whiteboard.

"Okay, so if you route the fuel line all the way down through the frame it creates way too much back pressure, and you can get really dangerous buildups without the right maintenance. But if you pull it up and around and through the top to the engine, you're going to end up with the right PSI every time. Right?"

Claudia pointed to her diagram as she talked, circling each bit with the pen until it was pretty much impossible to tell what it had been a drawing of.

Okay, so, she was actually pretty dead on with her notes, which probably no one in the classroom could follow but Zack, but the fact of the matter was that she had taken the pen out of his hand and gotten up and started going off on her own, without even asking. Zack would never have made so bold a move in a classroom Dr. Brennan was teaching, even if she'd made a mistake (he would have politely raised his hand), and he hadn't even made a real mistake.

He was fairly stunned, needless to say, and mostly just stared in appalled silence as Claudia went on and on. Finally, she was done, and Zack just sort of gaped for a second until he extended one slightly shaking hand (he couldn't help it if he got the shakes every now and then; it was just his nerves) and gave her a slightly impatient look. "That is also a valid way of explaining the principle I was only halfway through elaborating upon, but you're incorrect. I was not wrong. Your explanation is merely an alternative."

Claudia had been grinning at Zack, obviously expecting his approval, and when he sort of brushed her off she frowned and crossed her arms a little defensively.

"Yeah, but my way is easier to understand. See, the Guggenheim principle thing is like, way more comprehendable than the Tate theorem. I mean, this is a class, right? Aren't you supposed to start with the easy stuff?"

She was vaguely aware that this was probably a little out of line, but Claudia was a little too distracted by science to try and act like someone who'd ever got on well with her teachers in school.

Zack was perfectly more or less comfortable with asserting his authority in the lab, but in the classroom? That was too close to a social setting for him. He wasn't comfortable with telling anyone what to do, let alone a group of people. Usually if they just sat quietly and listened to him -- which they usually did -- he was fine, but...this? He really wanted to tell Claudia to sit down so he could move on with the lesson (this was kind of embarrassing and the situation was only increasing his discomfort) but he wasn't sure how to go about doing so, so he chose what he did know.

Science.

Claudia's hasty assertions were getting to him. She seemed to be missing the point of his lesson entirely. "But my method is the more precise. Engineering is about precision. Just because this is a classroom doesn't mean I have to explain in layman's terms -- then no one would learn anything at all. If you can't understand this method, then there'd be no point in using another method, because then you just don't understand the fundamentalsHis brow ( ... )
