Readin', writin', and Rock and ROOOOLLLLLLL!!!!

After a gap of something like six years, Janet Fitch is releasing another novel. You might remember all the hype about "White Oleander" when it came out... and then the second wave of hype when Michelle Pfeiffer shot and pissed all over one of the greatest characters in modern literature with her overdone performance in the film version. (Actually I generally think Michelle Pfeiffer's acting is really solid, and was uber disappointed when she ruined "White Oleander"... but then I saw an interview with her where she said she had really wanted to hold back more with the character but the director encouraged her to blitzkrieg it. So maybe the corny acting isn't really her fault in this case.)

The novel was extraordinarily well-written for a new author and deserved all the gushing praise it received. I read my copy to tatters and circulated it amongst all family and friends. The writing is so lyrical and organic, I never get tired of re-reading it. As soon as I see it in stores, I'm picking up Janet Fitch's newest effort:

I'm grateful I have some time to read again, although I seem to do most of my reading on buses these days. I'm also looking forward to reading the first chapters of a novel a friend of mine is writing (re-writing, actually... I read an earlier version of this but apparently he's taken it in a very different direction on the re-write). It's pretty cool to get a sneak peek at new work by someone you know. He's encouraging me to get writing as well, so we can form a proofreaders' co-op, maybe.

If anyone's at Barrymore's tonight, look for me, Beanie and FoxieDoxie. We'll be yee-hawing to Big Jeezus Truck, somewhere in the stage left section.
