Ruby nods, eyes darting to the right. "And you?"

Sam shrugs. "Same as it ever was."

"Same as you want it to be, you mean?" Ruby says, can't help it, the need to challenge, to subvert his authority in little tiny ways and the slink of her hips, shift of weight from one side to another.

Sam closes his eyes, opens them, warm smile. Ruby thinks it's why he likes her, sometimes, because she's like Dean. She's always been more like Dean than him. "I've missed you too."

Ruby scoffs, starts down the path, towards what she's come to see. "And Dean?"

"I'm meeting him later," Sam says, following behind her.

"I'll be going soon," Ruby says, tilting her head just so and stopping.

Sam waits. Like always, he waits without asking why. Dean would ask why, Dean would dig around, pry at her until she admitted it, why she always asked Sam to take her to the graveyard in Lawrence. Why this particular one?

Ruby drops to her knees on the earth, feeling it wilt and die. Traces the name etched in stone.

The grave is empty, body went missing, reported dead eventually. Family had to though, had to put a headstone in the family plot, had to remember her somehow.

Ruby's lived in this meat-sack for years. The soul of the original owner had died the day she forced her out. Not a trace of her remains in Ruby.

But still, she's pulled to her grave like a moth to flame. And something grows inside her when she sees her name, a name she never claimed as her own, hers without being hers all at once. And it's never mattered to her what she feels when she sees that name, just that she feels something at all. The most wonderful and horrible things.

Ruby stands up, and stuffs her hands in her pockets. Sam takes her arm, gentleman. Gentle giant, she smirks to herself. "Walk me out of here, huh?" she asks him, knowing she doesn't have to, but needing to say something in the space between them, as the tears break and fall against her cheek.

**

Sam's never asked, because he's not sure that he'd like to hear the answer.

He doesn't want to know how Ruby knew his cousin.
