Name: Hal
Character Information
General
Canon Source: Kingdom Hearts series
Canon Format: Video games, for PS2, DS and such
Character's Name: Vexen, alias/titles: Number IV, The Chilly Academic
Character's Age: I'd say about forty, late thirties at the very youngest. For detail purposes I'd just say 42
What form will your character's NV take? A run of the mill lab binder. Probably white with the Nobody motif because that is just how the Organization roles.
Abilities
Character's Canon Abilities:
Vexen is an ice manipulator. On a basic level he can withstand lower temperatures, doesn't like higher ones, and can create and warp ice to his whim. His limit break in 365/2 Days is called Diamond Dust and it's basically three powerful ice attacks followed by a massive ice pillar. In Kingdom Hearts world these kind of spells can occasionally freeze people in place for a short while.
He also has a weapon he can summon and vanquish at will. It's name is 'Frozen Pride' and it's a shield he uses for both defense and attack. Attack wise it's mediocre but with defense it's quite powerful. In Final Mix+ the shield has a hit point gauge of it's own and no frontal attacks will hit Vexen until the shield's gauge is gone.
Like the other Organization members he can open portals and slip through to a different location. In 365/2 Days his stats show highest in magic, with mediocre attack and defense.
Weapons: 'Frozen Pride,' a large, almost tear dropped shape shield. It's more a defensive weapon but he can use it to attack, striking with the front of the edges. He can summon it at will from lord knows where. Knowing Kingdom Hearts it's Darkness (or Nothingness? Who knows.)
History/Personality/Plans/etc.
Character History:
Vexen was once a man named Even, a scientist at Radiant Garden and one of the six apprentices to Ansem the Wise. Well, once five apprentices, that is until amnesiac Xehanort joined the ranks. Things went down hill from there, the term 'bad influence' comes to mind but a lot isn't known about how exactly things played out.
What we do know is Even, along with the other apprentices, began experimenting on the heart behind their master's back. Initially Ansem had been studying Xehanort's heart for his lost memories and hearts in general, hoping to find a way to stop darkness should it ever threaten his home. He built vast basement labs where the apprentices began some inhuman experiments on the heart.
When Ansem found out about this work he tried to convince them to stop, an effort that was ultimately led to the apprentices banishing him to the 'Realm of Nothingness.' Even and his accomplices in the end were destroyed by the darkness they experimented with, losing their hearts to said darkness and reemerging as a being known as Nobodies, creatures without hearts.
I'll tentatively add what little we see of Even in Birth By Sleep, though I say tentatively because what I know of the game is fan translation. The game seems to set Even, Ienzo (Zexion) and Xehanort (Xenmas) as the scientist or scholars, while Braig (Xigbar), Aeleus (Lexeaus) and Dilan (Xaldin) seem to take a more physical, guard role, even though they all are called scientists in other games regardless. Even meets Ven, a boy who by a long, complicated plot point I won't try to explain has connections with both Sora and Roxas. Even recognizes that Ven has no darkness in his heart and thanks the boy when he saves Ienzo, later telling Ven he feels they (Even and Ven) have some fate together.
And back to canon I know fully. What happened immediately following their change into Nobodies isn't explained, but Xehanort seems to take control of the group, forming it as 'Organization XIII.' Each member is given a number, Vexen's being four, and their original name is swapped around with an added 'x' to create their nobody name.
Out of the original six Vexen seems to be the only one who focuses on scientific study. When Roxas joins Vexen is one of the six members to help train him early on, before he and said members are sent to the Organization's second base, Castle Oblivion. He is also presumably the head of the Replica Project by this point, and the one who creates or helps create Xion, though in 365/2 days he is sent away before she begins to truly emerge.
Vexen lived in the basement levels of the castle with Lexeaus and Zexion, the group which had vested interest in stopping Marluxia, a newer member and the castle's master, who was going to use Sora to overthrow the Organization. Vexen, who hated Marluxia for several reasons, could not stand for this. When Zexion figured out Riku too was in the castle the group decided that Riku's dark powers could defeat Sora, thus Marluxia.
Vexen confronted Riku, luring him into a fight to collect data on the boy. With that data he created a replica of Riku which he planned to use against Sora, a Riku which would tap into his dark powers, unlike the real Riku. He tested the replica against Riku before offering Axel and Larxene to use it against Sora. To do so they put Riku's memories into the replica, despite the replica's wishes.
Unfortunately with Riku's memories the replica began to go off track, protecting Namine rather than defeating Sora. Marluxia used this against Vexen, stating that Xenmas would be informed of this failure unless Vexen destroyed Sora. Out of desperation and a need to prove superiority Vexen agreed and set out to defeat Sora.
In his first confrontation with Sora Vexen delved into the Keyblade Master's memories, creating a card so that Sora could visit Twilight Town. For the Organization itself this was dangerous, as Twilight Town brought Sora closer to learning of his own Nobody, Roxas. Marluxia used this as an excuse to order Axel to terminate Vexen as a traitor.
Vexen and Sora met in Twilight Town and fought, while Vexen tried to break Sora of his illusions and false memories. Just as he was about to really begin on the topic of Roxas Axel came, throwing a chakram into Vexen's back. Despite his pleading Axel killed Vexen.
Point in Canon: Right at the point of his death, when Axel threw his chakram to eliminate him. Before this Vexen had been ordered by Marluxia to destroy Sora and he had engaged Sora in combat. In the fight he 'delved into Sora's memories on the other side of his heart' and gave him access to Twilight Town. In Twilight Town they fight again, and Vexen, defeated by Sora, is cut off by Axel who kills him.
Character Personality:
Vexen is kind of a dick, and by kind of I mean extremely. To forgo the inevitable puns his personality is very much like his element, icy, and he regards most as inferior or ignorant. He's a brilliant scientist and he knows it, very very well, and he doesn't give respect easily or often. Most people fall under the category of normal sort of idiocy, with the occasional person he'll respect enough to treat as an equal or without contempt.
He views life as an experiment, and with it people. It's important to note before continuing that Vexen is a Nobody, and because of this he does not have a heart. What does that mean exactly you ask? Delving through the vague info that is Square Enix and Disney's canon, we're to assume that Nobodies can't feel, or at least that they can't feel the way a normal person does. We see examples of Nobodies forming attachments, ie Axel and Roxas, and of Nobodies showing emotions, ie Vexen and his temper. For all intents and purposes it seems that at the very least a Nobody can remember feeling, like an echo or a memory, because in their own way that's what they are, the echo or memories of the person who lost their heart.
So back on track. People are often simply subjects to Vexen, who takes greatest pride and pleasure in his work. While what brief glimpses we get of Even suggest he was a decent enough person (besides the whole you know, experimenting with darkness thing) Vexen seems to be that insatiable need for knowledge unburdened by morality and the matters of the heart.
Despite being a brilliant scientist Vexen tends to make mistakes. A lot in Chain of Memories. His seat is low in the Organization's meeting room, perhaps from failures or perhaps from the fact he does so few missions. He tends to focus on his work rather than the missions the rest of the team are assigned and mistakenly tries to use his rank as the fourth member for power and respect when the real show of rank in the Organization seems to be mission success.
Respect itself is very important to Vexen, who seems to believe he deserves more than he gets. The other members treat him rather poorly, especially Larxene and Marluxia, who he hates for having more power even though Marluxia is the eleventh member. Despite this need for respect he rarely gives it in return, and despite his status as a nobody he has an extremely short fuse and is prone to getting flustered and angered rather easily.
Vexen also shows fear (or whatever you would call a Nobody's 'fear') and more importantly an ability to be manipulated by fear. Marluxia threatens him with informing Xenmas of his failures, a threat that proves incredibly effective even in light of Vexen's pride. He also begs for his life before Axel delivers the final blow, rather unabashed and, of course, fruitless.
In short Vexen is a workaholic with a large sense of pride and a paranoid streak to match.
Character Plans: In a lot of ways I think the game premise wouldn't throw Vexen off too badly. Bad shit happening and waking up in a new world? Been there. Under the constant threat of creatures that form through Darkness? Done that. Not that he wouldn't take it seriously, in fact he'd take it very seriously, maybe even with a bit of worrying fascination, but it wouldn't be a setting that threw him completely off his game.
He'd most likely end up at one of the factions or offering to help one with human experimentation. He would have absolutely no qualms with horrific experiments of any kind, as long as they're useful and fascinating. I think he'd probably side more with SERO and be fascinated by the Pull, but honestly if anyone showed any sort of regard or respect for his work he'd probably work with them like the big ham he is.
Of course there's the matter of Organization members and how that loyalty would manifest, but for the most part they'd have to be on the same page for Vexen to bother. At this point only Xenmas could get him to show loyalty (through fear mostly) unconditionally.

I find myself yet again pondering the matter of will, and more importantly it's power over both memory and the heart- emotions, if some of you less informed prefer the incomplete term.
Here, for example, power and it's manipulation seem to rest occasionally on the manifestation of will. Not quite unlike the practice of magic, though many find a sort of natural knack for such things while other strong willed individuals do as well. [His tone becomes more thoughtful, almost forgetting the network.] Is it possible even magic of my own reality knew no bounds? While there were certainly great heights one could reach it seemed only through the power of forces beyond even the control of magic- light and dark, the heart-
[He stops with a slight huff.] Though how some individuals here wield the power of will with their ignorance is beyond even me.

It was the first time he had been caught after the sirens.
For the first few days Vexen had merely scoffed at the warnings, Darkness on the tongues of beings who knew nothing about what Darkness truly was. Had he not watched the first Heartless's birth, in those cramped, white walled labs so many years before? Had he and the others not all been swallowed by that same horrific power, their own hearts still formed in some terrible beast worlds away?
Yes, it still brought a chill up Vexen's spine, at the memory of all that Darkness had taken. It was a tremor that had no place in his body, that was only a memory of the terror he could no longer process. Only a memory strong enough to still cause that shake.
It was a week in when the siren's rang and he found himself still on the streets. When darkness fell it was not like the darkness he knew, both more and less primal than the droves of heartless that had torn apart Radiant Garden. Something was rearing it's head, and whatever it was radiated heat, like a fire too close to the skin but not yet enough to burn. Whatever pride had made his steps and expression firm vanished under the memory of death- near death- Axel's chakram hitting his chest and erupting in flames.
Vexen summoned his shield and took a panicked step back.
