"Your second instinct, therefore, was one of anger.
Quinn would come back into your atmosphere, just like that Train song from so many years ago claimed she would. She came back into your city of dreams and it wasn’t enough for her to haunt you in your dreams, now she was back as well, in person to remind you of the nights she wouldn’t leave you alone." Yes, I love this! I've written it the other way too, where it's Rachel who comes back into Quinn's life and it makes her angry because how dare she come back and make everything hurt all over again? The only thing more painful than forgetting is remembering.
"She was everywhere, except where you wanted her to be." Okay, that has to be one of the most simple stunning sentences I've ever read. That line, completely removed from all context speaks to love in general and we've all had someone like that for us, and ouch, it's so good
"To anyone else, she would look relaxed, but you knew Quinn well enough to know it was simply an act. She wasn’t at ease at all; if anything she was bracing herself for rejection. There was something enchanting about Quinn when she allowed herself to feel vulnerable." Body language down to a T.
“I needed to see it for myself,” she eventually said, breaking the silence." For as much and as long as Quinn knew, everything Rachel could be and do, she'd never be able to stay away for long. She'd cave, she always did when it mattered the most, and I find such beauty that she let Rachel see her there. Quinn could have snuck in the shadows, watching hidden, and left without Rachel ever knowing she was there. Like you said, Quinn doesn't do anything by accident. It was deliberate, letting Rachel see her, them going out to eat pie. Lovely.
This was out of character, even for someone with as many personas as Quinn. *snicker*
“That’s exactly the problem!” Santana snapped at you. “You never asked her to choose and yet she is constantly picking you. She cares about you. She wants to save you. And you don’t even need saving.” ugh, my heart "you don't even need saving". Quinn's always been so selfless in her misery, it's heartbreaking.
Like a queen in charge of an entire empire but still wanted to please her subjects. Gosh, I love that. What a wonderful simile.
"But sometimes you just wished Quinn would let the outside world into her head, if only so you could just understand." This, I love this. it's how Rachel Berry feels about Quinn in canon - removing any shipping interpretations. Rachel's always wanted to understand, to understand and to help.
"Quinn was capable of many things but complete indifference was a form of self-defense." yes yes yes
“I never knew you liked gardenias, Rachel.” WAY TO MAKE MY HEART SEIZE RIGHT ALONG WITH RACHEL'S
"She believed in you, and you believed in her, and somewhere along the way the two started to intertwine." Ugh. Yes. This. This right here is why I love Rachel and Quinn together. Gorgeous.
I think this is the nicest review I've ever gotten - thanks so much!
I think sometimes someone leaves, and we think we're fine, that everything is grand without them, and then they come back and you realize you weren't quite as okay as you thought you were. I think that mentality is interesting, you know, of thinking you're fine and it takes someone coming back, not leaving, to realize it isn't the case at all.
Fun little confession/anecdote: the line about the queen being in charge of her empire is actually inspired by my cat, who is a ruthless tyrant and rules everyone with an iron paw. But she's also very cuddly, so you can of want to forgive her for that. ;-)
Thanks again for such a lovely review, and hope your weekend is going well. :)
