Character Number: Two

Name: Calen Shielder
Source: Original Character.

Appearance: Calen looks like your average 6'0 tall, well toned young man. He has dark brown hair which he keeps cut into a shaggy style. Dark brown eyes, with a light but not pale complexion. He is lithe, not overly muscled. Physically he does not appear as strong as the D.N.A inside of him makes him. Calen leans towards the comfort of jeans, button-downs or comfortable sweaters. Sneakers on his feet, he can not wear hats as they aggravate his ears. Calen can be very visibly expressive. Often seen with a smile, confused, skeptical any type of emotion you can think of, his face shows it easily. He does not hide emotions well. Even when smiling, if something is bothering him it shows in his eyes. Also only when with the twins does the sparkle of his smile reach his eyes, showing that Calen is at that time truly happy.

Personality: When asked to describe Calen the first word that comes to mind is complicated. An animal, hunter, killer, alpha male and teenager all in one. There are in actuality two sides to this young man. His 'Human' side, Calen when he has full control of the animal side of him and poses no immediate threat to anyone. Unless of course they try to harm him or the twins. But-this side of him can only remain when he is near the twins. When without them Calen's 'Panther' side takes over. His defective make up becomes a problem. The animal D.N.A over rides all sense of rational thought and he becomes a hunter, killer. Since he is truly two different people in these states of mind, I'll describe them separately.

First is his 'Human' side. Calen is a compassionate, insightful young man. He will offer an ear, shoulder, hand anything that might be needed to anyone he can. He is loyal, protective and very loving towards the wins. They come first for him in absolutely everything he does. Even though he does possess a higher than average intelligence, Calen is not condescending nor cocky. With the exception of his immediate defensive bristling towards doctors, scientists or any form of public figure type. In interactions with them he comes off as smart mouthed and disrespectful. Calen has his moments of wit; he's not just a dry bland personality. He does not trust easily, though his nature will make it seem as if he is comfortable. It's typically just a ruse, used to make sure he draws no suspicion to himself or the twins.

Calen possesses a naturally inquisitive nature. If there is something he doesn't know about he'll immediately become intrigued. Calen knows what happens to him when the twins aren't around. He fears it's coming; he also expresses a very deep regret over the times he has lost control. Hurting people is not something he enjoys. Even if it's necessary to keep the twins safe, he suffers guilt deeply afterwords. It's something that is noticeable to anyone but the twins. This is because Calen will always hide his darker, upsetting emotions. His goal is to let them lead as normal of a life as possible, now that they are free. In the days leading up to a lose of control, when he knows it's coming. Calen becomes depressed, pessimistic, fatalistic. He is doom and nothing else. His points are usually true as he is naturally a realistic type. But his mood is an onset of melancholy and fear. The latter not showing through so that Calen seems to be a depressed, emotional young man at points.

He will only drink water or luke-warm milk. While a good portion of his diet consists of raw meats; he has found a distinct love for pizza. A food he'd never tried till escaping the lab. He can display a temper at times, nothing too drastic. He's not easily annoyed and will when interacting with someone he likes go the extra mile to make them feel comfortable. Though, when in his right mind Calen is not prone to revealing much about who or what he is. His main concern being that the twins remain safe and the scientists in the lab have drilled it into his head that the outside world will hurt them. Because of this as well, he is immediately more trusting and drawn to others who are viewed as different. That big brother type persona he has with the twins will usually become prominent.

Now to reveal that darker side of Calen, the 'Panther' side. This is the side that until the twins and without their influence is prominent. The rosite having enhanced the animal D.N.A and instincts to an unexpected level. A cunning hunter, his tracking ability is especially keen in this state. But one should mention first the days when control first begins to slip. Calen will slowly become more physically violent, paranoid. Waiting for the hunger to take over he slowly snaps from lucidity into a blood hazed world. And he knows it's coming, he has no way of stopping it except when the twins are with them. Something in the bond the share grounds him to reality.

Once his control is completely gone he may retain the form of a human. But Calen will indiscriminately use his powers to hunt anyone and everyone. Save for Calista and Calis. He becomes nothing more than an uncaged animal. Ravenous and blood-thirsty from having been tied for so long. He goes berserk. Hunting and tracking any being he comes across. Even if they were previously a friend, he will not care. He attacks with a viciousness.

In this state of mind there is no remorse, there is no regret. There is only the scent of human blood and the need to fill his mouth with human flesh. Pure animalistic instinct. No sense of right or wrong, just survival. In the simplest of terms, Calen becomes a cunning hunter. A beast looking for his next meal; and he happens to not give a damn where he gets it from. He'll simply ravage the meat till he's full then move on to the next kill still dripping blood from his mouth and hands.

History: Calen's story begins nine months before November 13, 1993 at 6am. This is the night the first was created and implanted into the synthetic womb. The great hope of the Shielder project. A cross breed between panther and human D.N.A. The implanted memories and abilities of a trained assassin, highly acclaimed computer tech and a super genius. He was meant to come from that womb nine months later, the ultimate being. Or so they thought.

The drugs succeeded, but they were lacking some components. No worry, every experiment must suffer some failures. Even though the young child became increasingly more animalistic and vicious as he grew. They saw no reason to kill him. Instead they housed him in a confinement room and prepared to try again. With a superior strain of D.N.A. Calen was too animalistic, a hunter he lacked any of the necessary human emotional traits to be considered one. Despite the fact that he was able to speak and walk like a human. Everything about him was a pure, cold blooded animal.

That is till the Twins are born, November 13, 1994 his first birthday. The day the Shielder project finally succeeded. And Calista and Calis Shielder were born.

Calista along with her brother Calis were left in the crib only four short hours after their birth. Every one of their tests had been off the charts. The four scientists, the only workers in the lab were over the moon. Only this first night did anyone keep 'watch' over the trio. They wanted to make sure the violent animal that Calen had developed to in a short year did not attack the infants. What they witnessed that night is what some would call a miracle.

The normally vicious child moved from his bed. Already able to walk and speak as a grown up would despite his young age, his mind had advanced more like an animal. So despite the super intelligence he was a hunter. It made him dangerous, at least to very small children such as Calis and Calista. But he did not make even one move to hurt them. Instead the scientists watched as the young Calen sniffed each twin in turn. Both making small sounds and grabbing for his face. Amazingly he used his rough patched tongue to lick both of them as if they were his kits.

Over the next several weeks as the twins developed, Calen became their caretaker. He did everything for them, he made sure they were feed, changed, bathed. He slowly turned back into a human. Teaching the twins everything he knew, even how to walk and speak. The three lived this way for their entire childhood. Never apart from each other they slipped into a pack like way of life. Calen cared for the twins every need and taught them to take care of themselves. The older brother figure.

Calen's only focus in life from this time on was caring for the twins. They made him human, gave him purpose. The trio were raised with only each other and the scientists for company. The latter only present for tests and lessons. They monitored the children the remainder of the time through cameras placed in the walls and ceiling of the confinement room.

They were given lessons every day. Living within the hidden lab deep in the West Virginia hills, fit with synthetic environments to meet every one of their needs. They were even able to be taken into a room that allowed Calen to teach them to hunt. Calen was happy and sane as long as he had the twins. Even during these hunting lessons he was able to keep his sense of self. As long as he could keep the twins safe and happy, he did not worry over anything else. He'd spend their free-time either relating wild tales to Calis or reciting the days lessons for Calista. Both of them seemed to fall asleep to the timber of his voice.

The only change in their confinement room over the years was the sizes of the beds and the level of the educational games and material offered. Everything they did, said, ate was recorded continuously on video tapes. Yet, they were relatively happy. Calen longed for freedom; but feared it at the same time. Worried what would happen if they were ever separated.

Then came November 13. It was the twins sixteenth birthday and Calen's seventeenth. This is the day the mistake happened. The scientists wanted to see if this remarkable human transformation in Calen was permanent. So they separated him from Calis and Calista. He was taken to a distant part of the facility and placed in an isolation chamber. The first night the nightmares began. The memories of the assassins kills racing through, sinking a deep guilt into Calen's subconscious as he couldn't help but feel these things were his fault. By the seventh day, his grip on sanity was entirely gone. Calen had reverted back to the animal he was at birth.

Like a ravenous animal locked away for years he attacked. He hunted the scientists, their scents fresh in his nose as they are the only others present except for Calis and Calista. They lived in the facility as the children could never be left alone and no one was allowed near their creations. As Calen raced through the halls he came face to face with two of the scientists. In a blood thirsty frenzy he not only killed them, but ripped and mutilated the bodies with his claws and teeth. A large growl of hunger alerts the twins, setting Calis into a feeding frenzy, desperate to reach his older brother. Calista reverts into her animalistic state as she knows it will be needed to protect Calen and Calis if anything should happen. The twins broke free and raced for Calen, as they found him the third scientists stepped in his path. Thinking to kill the defective model and save the Twins. In an enraged frenzy he mutilates the man in front of the twins. Only moments later regaining his sanity as he looks on their faces now covered in this man's blood from his attack. Broken inside, he can not believe he just murdered three people so lustfully. As he begs for the Twins forgiveness, he also reminds them that they are no longer safe here.

The trio heads for the main doors, intending to escape to freedom. But Dr. Shielder has other plans; she doesn't intend to let Calista and Calis leave. Calen knows he has no choice, so with a heavy heart he attacks the woman who created and confined them all those years ago. The leader of the Shielder project. He does not have the heart to outright kill her in his right frame of mind. Instead he leaves the woman there, near death barely able to hang on as he and the twins escape through the front doors. The three children who had never seen real color or real sunlight then stepped, bloody and bruised into the bright, snow covered white hills of a West Virgina winter. The sky such a bright stark blue, Calis rushed head first into the cold white substance that he had only read about with a bright laugh. Calista held tightly to Calen as she watched a wide smile on her face, she felt hopeful to all that was to come. Calen felt some of the burden raise as he wiped the guilt from his face and watched his 'family' take their first breaths of fresh air. Their new life had begun.

Sample Journal Post:*There's a flickering of the screen, the video comes on to show the face of a worried young man. The voice feed is activated next. There's a tremor to the voice. How could there not be after what he'd just learned* I'm Calen Shielder, please somebody has to help me. I've lost the Twins, Calis, Calista if you're here please respond you guys. I'm not sure how or why I am here, I don't really care. I just need-- no I have to find them, it's paramount that they are located. Anyone who can offer help, I lack any funds to pay--but please, help me find them. Before it's all too late.

Sample Post : Day two, day two, day two, over and over again these words played in Calen's mind as he looked up at the sky. He'd left the apartment he'd been given. Calen had walked till he could pretend the smell of that human blood wasn't making him mad. Every night for the last two nights, the nightmares had haunted him. He knew it was coming, but how could he get anyone here to believe him. There had been no progress on finding the Twins. He knew they weren't here; even now he could not scent them.

The sound of a low growl purred from his throat. Muscles rippled beneath his skin; that animal inside was calling to him and Calen had no way of fighting it. A strangled sob ripped from him; he collapsed to his knees. Hands used to cover is face, his shoulders shook violently as the fear overwhelmed him. He was going to kill people, innocent people--they'd never hurt him. But none of that would matter, not when that seventh day came. He couldn't stand this, to feel, to know what was coming and have no way of stopping it.

Calen hunched and his hands pressed into the ground beneath them. He had to fight, he had to control. Somehow he had to be able to stay human didn't he? Yes! He thought, boosting himself up morally. The next moment a small flicker of movement in a bush and the scent of fresh blood assaults him. He growled low, eyes flashed to a yellow gleam. It took Calen only seconds to have tensed his muscles and pounced on that scent. Jaws parted he was prepared to sink his teeth into the thing he'd caught. Only to find, his mind was playing tricks on him or the fae were. Beneath his crushing grip was a log; the scent of fresh blood gone now. Calen cried out in agonized pain, not physical but emotional. He was going to become an animal and no one could stop him.
