Saw IV's current incarnation won't be hitting the main street theaters any time soon, it got an NC-17 rating. I'm not a huge fan of the "Saw" films. The first one was OK, but after that it was all down hill. Seemed like a good concept that was poorly executed.
But that said, I think they should absolutely, positively leave it as is. I hate, hate HATE the MPAA, and the fact that their stupid irrational ratings system completely screws artists. I want every filmmaker with any kind of clout to leave their movie rated NC-17, rather than having a group of social and religious zealots arbitrarily censor them. I want society to get used to seeing movies get NC-17 ratings (as many, many R rated films do before they're forced to go back and censor themselves), and be OK with that.
Very few people have had the guts to push this so far. Most notably among them was John Waters with his film "A Dirty Shame" (which under no circumstances deserved the NC-17 it was given; the film wasn't even a hard 'R', IMO). But he isn't quite a big enough fish to lead that fight. I'm not sure if the "Saw" series is either, but they have a decent following, and if the four major theater chains that live in the pocket of the studios think they're too high and might to play them, it means more people will go to independent cinemas to see them. People walking into independent theaters under any circumstance is always a good thing. And maybe, just maybe, while they are there, they'll discover that there exists a whole world of excellent films created completely outside the studio system. I smile at the thought.
