Most of the history I read is out-of-print public domain stuff. Written by people largely critical of governments. So, it isn't propaganda, like what is taught in the public schools. Most of it is considered classic, like Edward Gibbon or Adam Smith.

Honestly, I couldn't care less about your healthcare system. I've heard both the good and the bad of it. It doesn't appeal to me. Holding doctors and pharmacists accountable as professionals, and eliminating the need for health insurance, that interests me. Making sure that those who can pay do, and that those who cannot pay are taken care of, that interests me. Raising taxes and nationalizing health care does not interest me. I was hoping the US could be innovative in this area, instead of just copying the German/Japanese plan, or aping the Canadian plan.

Places like Ancient Greece and Rome and the British Empire fell apart because the common folk put these government officials on a pedestal and allowed them to run amok and get filthy, stinking rich off the backs of the poor.

Clearly, you do not follow American politics closely. People worship Obama and Bush. They think that their party can do no wrong.

In order to have a free market system, you need governed regulation.

No. In order to have a free market system, you need an educated public. A free market means that no transaction occurs unless both parties agree to it. Only an idiot would agree to a transaction that puts him/her at a disadvantage. The problem is that our country, and most of the world, is full of idiots. Electing idiots to regulate other idiots won't fix our problems. Only when people stop acting like damned entitled fools with a free market work. Sadly, our public education system is ill-equipped to prepare people to take care of themselves, hence they fall under the mistaken belief that government should step in and take care of things for them. This isn't living. It's slavery.

You can have a balanced system, however, if everyone works towards a common goal: that of wanting EVERYONE to have freedom. Not just you.

People have to take care of themselves. I can't do it for them, and the government can't do it for them. We need to teach people this thing called personal responsibility. That would solve 90% of our problems. The remaining 10% could be solved through a simple safety net, which is as far as I will go to support Socialism.
