I wanted to show off the fifth and final item I made for the July 2008
full_moon_swaps swap. My partner,
sundays_moon, really likes ritual tools. So I decided to make my very first wand.
I started with some downed twigs and branches I collected from the park next to my apartment complex. (No trees were harmed! These were all already fallen off the tree.)
Then I used Love's wood carving tools and started to it. I took the bark off and whittled it into shape.
The raw stick and the shaped wand:
After some further shaping and sanding, I twisted a big piece of copper wire, and then wrapped it along the top. I also took some glass beads in green and blue and glued them into the end.
And detail:
It looks better in person. It's hard to photograph a wand. It's nicely tapered at the end and I'm really proud of how it came out. I think I'm going to make a few more and list them on my site. The only thing I'd have liked to have done on it was stain it but the stain we had had gone bad and I didn't have the cash to pick up more. Still, the natural wood (Oak) is very pretty in a delicate sorta way. There is some grain to it though again, you can't really see it in the picture.
I'm mailing it today so I'm filtering this post from my partner until she gets it. I wanted to show if off though because I was pleased with how it came out.
Thoughts appreciated!
