Flutterby Butterfly
On Sunday, we decided to make a last-minute trip out to Walt Disney World. Our passes are only good through May 20th and we're not going to have the cash to renew so I want to take advantage of it as much as possible. Besides, I had to pick up something for a friend AND wanted to grab something for my Full Moon Swaps package. Oh and you know, it's Disney so I always want to go.
Epcot has an annual event called the Flower and Garden Festival. They set up all these cool topiaries, flowers all over the place, plants and exhibits. They also have a butterfly garden. It's a lovely festival and Epcot is so pretty and colorful during it. Well, Saturday night we went to bed with warnings about the weather Sunday AM. Severe weather warnings - thunderstorms, tornado watches, high wind advisories. It wasn't a pretty forecast. And when we woke up, it was quite nasty out there. We left here around 11am and headed out to Orlando. As we drove, the sky got darker and it even drizzled a little.
As we arrived, there was no rain, but it was overcast and very breezy. In fact, it was gusts to 45mph all day long. Still, an overcast day at Disney is better than a sunny one at home. Turns out, it was a beautiful day. By around 2pm or so, the sun came out, the sky turned blue and though the breeze remained, the temperature was wonderfully cool. It was only a high of 77F (25C) with low humidity. (To put it into perspective, the day before? It was 90F (32C) with a lot of humidity and no wind.) And the best part was, that the fear of the terrible weather in the morning must have scared away much of the crowd because it was very uncrowded - especially for this time of year.
Which brings us to the title of the post. I was able to get some fantastic butterfly photos this year. Last year, I couldn't get any, but this year they were very docile, still and in good quantity for nice photographic opportunities.
See my butterfly garden photos here! (If you'd like any of them for personal use only as your desktop wallpaper, feel free to give me your screen size and I'll be happy to make one up for you. I really like how they came out.)
After Epcot, we went over to the Magic Kingdom. It got quite chilly after the sun went down and poor Love was in a tee and shorts. But it too was pretty empty crowd-wise so we hit some rides, caught a bite to eat and headed home around 9pm or so. It wound up being a lovely day.
