Character Number: Second.

Character: Yuzuru Otonashi
Fandom: Angel Beats!

Personality:
Otonashi is best described as a saint-like person. He does his best to make people happy and save them if he believes he is capable to protect them. In his early life, he was unhappy since he didn’t know of a meaning in his life and felt useless because of so. However, with the loss of his precious little sister, he realized that he found happiness whenever he hears people’s sincere thanks whenever he does even the smallest things for them.

That is why Otonashi decided to work hard and become a doctor. Unfortunately, a severe train accident has cut his dream short and gave him further scars upon seeing a person he tried to help to die. But until the end, he remained true to his purpose by donating all of his organs, even managing to inspire others because no matter how little their life is worth - they would be able to save someone’s life with their own body.

Outside his saint-like aura however, lies an ordinary boy that merely wants to help others and be acknowledged. Otonashi is just like a typical guy that seems boring when you look at him. This much is true, because he really isn’t much a conversationalist. More often, he’ll be the one listening to the other person and hearing their thoughts out. He speaks awkwardly at times and a number of his “dialogues” in the series are actually his own thoughts. Otonashi has a habit to take note of what he hears or sees from others and reflect them in his own mind.

Compared to the others from Shinda Sekai Sensen, who tend to be literally stupid or reckless, Otonashi is one of the few who are decent-minded and cautious. As everyone else is causing hilarity or trouble, Otonashi would be the one standing in the background and would say, “You idiot…”

And while Otonashi is indeed a sensible thinker, it is because he analyzes a situation too much, that it would lead him to not know where to start when he speaks. This would lead to frequent speech disfluencies, such as “uh, well…” or “um, you see…”

Though, there are occasions wherein the smart Otonashi would slip as well - being with the idiotic Shinda Sekai Sensen rubs off on him.

Otonashi, even through awkward at times, is actually quite social. He can be a wonderful friend once you get to know him. He has a nice sense of humor and can become immensely protective and loyal to those he considers precious to him. Such occasions are whenever he rides along his friends’ jokes or antics or he does some of his own. And then, when Otonashi had gotten to know everyone in time, he grew fond of the people in the Shinda Sekai Sensen. He didn’t want to leave any of them and wanted them to experience the happiness he also found into having no left regrets in their life. He also wanted to help Kanade, who is not part of the Shinda Sekai Sensen, to experience her own happiness.

And as Otonashi wanted to be acknowledged, he understands that others also wanted the same. He is quick to sympathize and forgive others even if they had done wrong, because he knows that those actions are not without reason. Otonashi’s sympathy leads him to be very empathic. When others fail to see a particular side of a person, it is him that will see it. Because of this, he is easily liked by anyone willing to look at him.

Over time, aside from developing his marksmanship skills, Otonashi also managed to develop his leadership skills. He was able to even replace Shinda Sekai Sensen’s leader, Yuri, when she is unable to command the others at times.

On a side note, Otonashi really likes drinking a particular drink called “Key Coffee.” He is also one of the few to try “Mapo Doufu” (Mapo Tofu) without eating rice with it. In the series, students tend to avoid it because of its extreme spiciness. He notes that it’s a shame because it really has a good aftertaste. He made Hinata try it as well, resulting in Hinata also learn to appreciate that unpopular dish.

History: Over here.

- Otonashi has medical knowledge since he was an aspiring medical student. At that, he does extremely well in academics - during one Physics exam, he commented that it was “easier than expected.”

Sample writing:
The steam that came out from the warm food was vividly seen as Otonashi raised his spoon and stared down. He was sitting in the Afterlife School cafeteria, surrounded by the usual noise of the said school. Otonashi was not really thinking of anything in particular, but regardless he was spaced out during the moment.

“This is… mapo doufu, Kanade’s favorite food,” he said to himself.

Mapo doufu. It was not very liked because of its extreme spiciness. But the flavor, particularly the aftertaste, it was really good. Otonashi couldn’t help but to faintly smile as he continued to gaze down the spoon. He raised it a little higher, letting the colorful spices around the spoonful be seen more clearly.

She liked it for a reason. He was glad that he knows why.

“It’s because it’s tasty, wasn’t it?” he continued to dwell in his thoughts, closing his eyes for the moment.

Otonashi had always felt bad for Kanade. It was painful to even think about. She would always be alone, eating by herself, while others were surrounded by smiles. And she was always fighting alone, while they were altogether in the Shinda Sekai Sensen.

Wouldn’t one say that it was unfair? Unfortunately, not everyone notices details as fast as he could.

But he knew that she is a sweet girl. He couldn’t help but to always look back at her. He wanted her to be part of them as well. He wanted the others to see Kanade for who she was, for her to have more friends to surround her…

Otonashi could still remember her words that day.

“There is no one like that.”

Otonashi knew about that, too. He knew the reason. It was because they were all already dead. Everyone would just pass on to their next life after they reached their goal or had gotten over their regrets. That is why this school existed in the first place.

Even if she would do her best to make friends, when their time was reached… After that…

After that, Kanade will once again be alone. It really was sad… painful.
Otonashi paused for a few seconds, causing his thoughts about the girl to float away. He raised his eyes away from the spoon as well. A sigh followed.

“Ah, geez… Can’t have it go cold.”

With that, he watched what was in front of him again and finally decided to take the first bite. He felt the familiar spiciness sting him almost instantly. But he endured it until the good flavors finally came to his tongue, making his smile return.

“… Maybe if I continue with this, I can get more used to eating it more.”

Kanade was just as misunderstood as the mapo doufu itself. But he will ensure that she won’t be for long, no matter what else he has to endure along the way. He will do what he can so that she doesn’t have to be alone anymore.

Sample journal entry:
[ Otonashi found himself staring down on the communicator in his hand. What is this, another one of those devices Yuri gave him? But before he had turned it on, he quietly looked around him. An uncertain glance across his face was forming. ]

… What the-

[ Where is this? Otonashi couldn’t recognize any of the sights around him right now. Yuri had already finished what they meant to finish… Wait, did it mean that he had already passed on?

Though he still hasn’t felt that he had fully finished what he is meant to do. He shouldn’t have passed on. They were all waiting altogether for Yuri to wake up. What’s the explanation for this one?

Otonashi clenched the device quietly in his hand. Hopefully, things are going to be fine.

Now is the time that Otonashi clicked on the device, he stared down quietly unto it and realized that it’s fully working. There’s even a video feature. How handy. ]

Right… Hello? Can anyone read this? I think I need an adult.

[ A pause. Otonashi needed to think of who was still with him that time. ]

Kanade, Hinata… Where are you?

Don’t tell me I fell into another one of those ridiculous traps. This is hardly funny.
