Heart-to-Heart Talk

[Yoko doesn't waste any more time. She dials Kevin's number and leaves a quick message on his answering machine. Then she takes a few deep breaths, looks at herself in the mirror, and heads out to the meeting place. Like Katusya said, sometimes you have to push past the uncertainty. And this is one of those times

Kevin shows up about half an hour later. He looks confused; his skin is fading back to pink-ish from what looks like a ridiculously thorough shower, and he's still kind of pruny. He smells very strongly of soap and cologne.

He waits on a bench, reading the newspaper, a teeny little bit anxious.

"...Kevin?" Yoko's standing in front of him with two of those travel cardboard coffee mug things in hand. She smiles at him briefly before nodding at the empty space next to him. "M-may I sit down?"

It's obvious that she wants to say something. And whatever it is, it's big. Reeeeally big.

He looks up and closes the newspaper, nodding. He forces a smile.

"Sure, sure.

You look nice."

Well... coffee. Was that a good sign?

Yoko sits down and hands one of the travel containers to Kevin. "I-it's black. I hope that's okay?"

She blushes a little at the looking nice comment. "I-I felt like wearing this. It's a nice day, so..." Well, it is pretty warm and balmy for that time of year. Makes sense!

"...Kevin? There's something I-I've been meaning to tell you. For a while now."

Kevin nods and accepts it.

"Yeah, thanks."

He raises his eyebrows and sits back, trying to project an air of casual interest.

"Oh?"

Well, shit.

"Uhm... I... I..."

Yoko's still lost for words. But this time, she's not going to change the subject. Instead, she blurts out those three little words that have been slipping out of reach for the past month.

"I love you!"

That over with, she turns bright red and hides her face in her hands. Well, at least she said it now.

He takes a sip of his coffee, focusing on it rather than her. Break-up talk, yep. Maybe it was the zombies.

And this is why he promptly chokes on his coffee and tries to play it off as it being too hot.

"Sorry..." he leans away, a look of "O_O" on his face, hidden from her for now.

"...I love you." Yes, sports fans, she said it again! This is one for the recordbooks! This will be a day to remember!

Okay, I'll stop now.

Suffice it to say, Yoko's heart just sank into her stomach. "B-but if you don't feel that way, I understand."

[sonotastars]

He looks away from her from a moment, trying to get some air back into his lungs.

"No, no. I... well, I mean..." he rubs the back of his head.

"...what brought this on all of a sudden?"

Yoko looks up at him and smiles weakly. "I-I've been thinking about it a lot. I tried to tell you before, but I got cold feet." A very faint chuckle and then she's right back to hiding her face in her hands.

"I-I wasn't sure until after the Raccoon thing."

[sonotastars]

He nods, quiet, and takes another drink, crossing one ankle over his knee. He doesn't look at her.

"What do you think this means for us, then?"

"To be honest?" Yoko looks up again, actually sitting upright. She's still blushing, though it's not as violent as before. "I-I hadn't thought of anything beyond this point. And even getting here took a long time."

She sighs and hangs her head. "...I knew it was a foolish idea."

[sonotastars]

He considers this. Yep, it sure did.

Play it cool, Ryman.

"So, speakin' hypothetically, if I said I love you too, where'd that leave us?"

[memory_blank]

Is that the faintest smile on Yoko's face? Wait, no, it's gone as fast as it came. But she's got an inkling that the others were right after all.

"H-hypothetically? I suppose this means that we would be in a relationship. I-it would mean we're more than just friends."

She sounds slightly hopeful at the prospect. Maybe she didn't confess her real feelings for nothing after all!

He rubs his chin.

"A serious relationship, then. Not just datin'."

He's starting to smile a little despite himself.

Yoko can't help it. A smile comes onto her face. The others were right. He did feel the same way she did!

"Of course, we'd still date and all. Am I right? But y-yeah, I suppose it would be a serious relationship!"

She's beaming right now. He just made her day- no, her entire week!
