Title: Daydreams
Genre: Romance
Who: Ohmiya
Rating: PG
Summary: Hard to imagine at first, but this might just end up perfect.
Train rides were always Nino's time to think, the only time that was his time on days where work and more work just couldn't be helped. His eyes saw flashes of scenery, pictures that blurred and slowed down again, always changed, felt exciting in spite of their simplicity. The image in his mind was static, charged and ready, but perfectly still.
If it ever moved, it wasn't with his face, always some unknown girl (and not men, but he didn't particularly care who was filling in, it only mattered that he wouldn't see them again). He could lie to himself better than he'd have liked, though others would just say he had an active imagination, prepared with stories of romance that could rival any drama.
"She'll miss her stop and panic, I'll hold her hand and tell her it's all right. She'll treat me to ramen... we'll eat ramen together," he'd suggest, but it couldn't go further, not when there was ramen involved.
Until one day his mind wandered, to inside jokes and faces made over bento, brushes of hands and knees and even stomachs when Ohno's body did the wandering and - like dominoes - they came together briefly, leaned together, almost fell.
Then it was his face and his voice and his everything, finally, finally pushing forward.
On the train. In his mind. But not for real.
"I'm just asking for a little of your time. You've never had a problem with that kind of request, right? You'll sit with me," Nino was asking, maybe forcing a little, but only with the best of intentions. Selfish intent, but not bad. It couldn't be too terrible of him when he knew in his heart that this was it.
"What you're asking... is crazy," Ohno objected, again and again, not even sparing a glance. To be fair, he seemed to have become tangled in an unreasonably long scarf tossed on him by stylists who were too used to buildings with too much air conditioning, no proper indication that summer had arrived. But maybe he thought that it had been years and that should have been enough time already. He didn't say it, but maybe that's what he meant.
It was difficult to get someone to see the big picture, what things could be if they wanted it enough. Maybe because neither of them had ever really wanted anything in particular for themselves. Nino didn't know how to persuade and Ohno didn't know how to change his mind. They'd always just accepted what they were told, even if that meant misery for a week or a month or a year.
But misery forever felt like something he ought to prevent, if possible.
"I couldn't see it either at first, maybe it is insane, but I don't care. You don't care. Think about one time you've cared that you were doing something ridiculous," Nino tried to direct Ohno's thoughts, ever-so-slightly, enough to get one day. One hour even.
"I care," Ohno pouted, though he wasn't too convinced of that, scratching his nose through a laugh before adding, "I just don't care enough."
Nino's grin was too wide - wide enough to make him close his mouth and open it again as a way to make up for the space his face just didn't provide. Ohno thought it was cute, but that didn't have to mean something.
"So you'll get dinner with me, and we'll call it a date, and when it's over I'll kiss you, and then you might know," Nino explained again, waiting for Ohno to finish pulling on his own shoes to lead the way.
"I could," Ohno started, his hand reaching out, his eyes on Nino's lips, "just do it now. Then I'd know sooner."
He was close. Closer than he'd ever been in the picture. And though it was what Nino wanted, what he wanted more than anything he'd ever wanted, it wasn't right to have Ohno's lips hover there hesitantly. It wasn't the moment for testing the waters, for Ohno's hands there.
"Stupid," Nino decided, taking a step back, grasping his hand tightly, "if we go too fast then you'll definitely miss it."
"Will not."
"Will too."
"Will not."
"You will, and you'll be sorry, because it's good, Oh-chan."
It was going to be really, really good.
On a slightly related note, I compiled an index of my Arashi fiction, with summaries and by length and pairing, you can find that:
HERE NOTE: Because I have had some major burn out issues lately (I think it shows D:), I'm planning after the final chapter of Sakumiya to take a short writing hiatus. Probably not much longer than a month, but then I'll be back with plenty for you. I've got a lot of ideas. Thanks to all the members of this community for your interest in my work thus far! ♥ My personal journal is mostly public if you want to see what I'm up to at any time. :)
