Pink is not her colour, she thinks as she stares into the mirror. Salmon; maybe. Carnation pink; possibly. But hot magenta? Definitely not. She screws up her nose as she turns her head from side to side. Regardless of which way she looks at her reflection, the fact remains stubbornly the same.
Pink is not her colour.
She is dreading walking out of the bathroom to show Mulder. Granted, it was her idea. ("The FBI will never look for a former medical doctor in a teen shop," she'd said. "The FBI will never look for a former medical doctor in a teen shop, with pink hair.") And he'd agreed, but now she's wondering why she chose that beyond all others.
Dana Scully, goth. It just doesn't sound right.
Taking a deep breath she opens the door, peering out into the room beyond. Mulder sits on the edge of the bed, staring pointedly ahead at the TV. She coughs.
"Is it safe for me to look?" He asks, without looking at her.
"Safe as it'll ever be, Mulder. It's not going to get any better."
He turns toward her as she emerges from the bathroom. Her bright pink hair accentuates the thick, kohl eyeliner that traces her eyes. The choker around her neck, studded with sharp metal spikes, sparkles in the harsh motel room light. A lip emphasises the curve of her mouth.
To his credit Mulder doesn't laugh. At least, not until she's left the motel on her way to the first day at her new job. Then, his laughter follows her down the block, trailing in the wake of her oversized jeans and battered sneakers.
"At least I'm making some money." She mutters.
