_______________
If pushed she would never admit to having Dana help her with the party to set her up with Rob. She’d argue it was a coincidence, a strange leap of fate that two attractive, single, intelligent people would end up at the same children’s party at the same time, but she’s never been pushed and she’s never had to admit it.
Ellen’s known Dana for years - since high school, in fact, when Dana had helped her with some ridiculous piece of algebra in class. She worries about Dana, though she wouldn’t tell her that. She knows what Captain Scully thinks of his daughter’s career choice; has lost count of the number of times she’s spoken to an exasperated Dana on the phone, soothing her in the aftermath of yet another off the cuff comment her father’s made. So when Dana shyly admits to having a date with the attractive, single, intelligent Rob, Ellen is happy. She lends Dana her favourite top, gives her suggestions on the things Rob’s interested in, and waits by the phone for the post-date de-brief Dana’s promised.
She is surprised, two days later, when Dana finally rings. She’d been expecting some good gossip, after this length of time, not to be told that she’d left the date early.
“But why?” She asked. “Didn’t you have a good time? Rod’s a nice guy.”
“I’m sure he is, El, but I got called to work. You know what it’s like - this case we’re working on… I, uh, I just had to be there,
Ellen thinks back to their conversation in her kitchen.
“He’s a jerk,” Dana’d said. “No, he’s not a jerk, he’s obsessed with his work.”
Sitting at the table, listen to Dana’s excuses, Ellen wonders if he’s the reason she’s suddenly become obsessed with her work.
