Fox sits bolt upright in terror, the sheets and blankets covering his bed thrown in disarray to the floor.
“Mom! Mom!” He calls and he half expects to hear nothing but silence in the too large house.
But she comes, a silhouette in his bedroom door outlined in light.
“Fox, shush,” she soothes and her weight on the bed is irrefutable. “You’ll wake half the neighbours with your shouting. What’s wrong?”
“I had a dream. I dreamed that Sam was gone, she was taken. Someone took her Mom, someone took Sam!”
Teena wraps her arms around her son as the tears fall from his eyes and he buries his face in her neck. His halting breaths subside as his mother comforts him. She rocks him in her arms as she stares out of the window to the black sky beyond, and thinks of her sleeping daughter in the next room.
