She is five, running along the smooth wooden deck of the naval ship her father commands. The sun is sinking low into the storm clouds gathering up ahead. The sea is lit with fire and boils on the horizon, painting the world in flame.
She doesn't count the laps as she runs, doesn't count the two time slap slap of her bare feet on the smooth wood. She tilts her head up and counts the flags waving from their masts: the red, white and blue; the stars and stripes. She counts the whirling seagulls cawing their storm warning up ahead.
One, two, three and back again four, five, six. They dive and swirl and she loses count, loses track; thinks of nothing but the sea, the sky.
Her father smiles at her affectionately and she waves as she speeds past, as the seagulls fly, as the deck rolls on.
