The cyclical nature of a post-apocalyptic story... anonymous January 6 2010, 23:17:58 UTC
The system consists of birth, expansion, stasis, stagnation, death, and finally rebirth.

A group begins, usually as an off-shoot of some larger body, and has little personality or core nature. Sometimes the group is created by the larger "mother" body rejecting the group, while other times the small group leaves of it's own volition. In either case, the process of a group being "born" is usually the shortest.

The group begins to gather knowledge & experience, and as time goes by they begin to expand. During this second period, the group will begin interacting with other groups - sometimes aggressively, sometimes compassionately - but in all cases, the interaction changes both parties. (It should be noted that this period is usually the longest.)

Eventually, the group begins to enter a period of stasis, in which it acknowledges it's borders are stable and it's culture is defined. The group continues to interact with both it's environment & those in it, but any changes that the group faces don't change the group's core.

Then, one day, someone notices a single crack that wasn't there the day before... and so the period of stasis has become stagnation.
