Exiting the apartments, Sheena sighed. Who knew that cooking could be so tiring? Thank the Goddess it was her break now... a bit of a respite before she had to run back in and help with the lunch rush. Well, at least she was learning how to cook now.

Leaning against the wall, she closed her eyes for a moment. However, the sound of rustling soon caught her attention and piqued her curiosity. Sheena walked around the apartments for a bit, before spotting a child working on the gardens. Approaching, she couldn't help but ask, "What're you doing?"

Arnold didn't look up right away, putting another handful of dead plants in the black garbage bag. "Cleaning up. Last night's freeze was a killer."

He looked up to see her and offered a smile. "I don't think we've met before. I'm Arnold."

Sheena tilted her head to the side, watching Arnold work. He certainly seemed to know what he was doing...

"I'm Sheena. Do... you need a hand?"

"Nice to meet you, Sheena."

He smiled a moment more before turning back to the plants and shaking his head. "Nah, I'm fine. It's kind of my job."

He continued working. "How long have you been here for, Sheena? I don't think we've run into each other before."

"Your job? But... you're a kid," Sheena frowned a little. Well, maybe he didn't see it as work?

"I've been here for about... two weeks? Maybe a little more than that. I've mostly just been working in the apartment's kitchen and looking around Memento. What about you?"

Arnold gave a fast grin. "Even kids need groceries, y'know?"

He returned to working. "A little over a month I think. There's some nice people here."

"I'm pretty sure the food the apartment makes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner is free, seeing as how I help make two of them," Sheena responded dryly.

"Have you remembered much yet? I've barely remembered anything..." her voice was wistful.

He laughed a little and shrugged as he continued to work. "Yeah, that's probably true. And at least we don't have to worry about rent." He threw more dead plants away. "I dunno. I guess it might be that I like to pick up things occasionally from the stores. The apartment's so...blah without any decorations."

He glanced up with a sympathetic smile. "Not really, no. I remember living in a boardinghouse. I think I was the superintendent's son or something. And I remember Christmases past. Other than that, it's a blank."

Sheena tilted her head thoughtfully, "That's actually a good idea. The place needs more color... but maybe it's not as bad if you've got a roommate."

"Hmm. Well, it's a start," she glanced off to the side, "I still don't get the whole Christmas thing though. Even after looking it up at the library."

"I don't have a roommate yet, so it kind of gets lonely at the apartment," Arnold said, continuing to laugh. "Do you have a roommate?"

The boy gave a little laugh at that. "The whole thing about Christmas isn't exactly easy to explain. But I guess, what it all boils down to, is spending time with family and friends and just showing them you care." He looked up at her. "Even if we don't remember the people we left behind, spending time with the people here isn't so bad."

She shook her head, "No, but I've got a neighbor. Tear Grants? She's pretty nice."

Sheena blinked, before glancing up, humming thoughtfully, "That... sounds a lot more appealing than some religious holiday to celebrate a supposed savior's birthday. It was pretty nice to hang out with the friends I've met so far, even if I didn't know I was supposed to get them anything..."

"I don't think I've met her yet."

Arnold chuckled a little at that. "Some people celebrate it that way. Like I said, Christmas is complicated. There's so many overlapping, traditional ways of celebrating it. But, like I said, spending time with friends and family seems to be a constant theme in all of them."

He turned back to the plants, shrugging a little. "It's no big deal. I didn't have enough money to get people anything, so I just played Christmas music on my harmonica for people."

Sheena shook her head, sighing, "It still makes me feel bad. Especially since one of my friends did get me something... I just want to repay them, you know?"

"Maybe you could bake them some brownies or something? Maybe make them their favorite food one night?" he asked, trying to be helpful. "I dunno. I sometimes find the best gifts can't be wrapped in a box."

"What're brownies?" she blinked. What a strange name... were they brown or something? "But that's a good idea, I'll keep that in mind."

Arnold smiled. "They're basically baked chocolate squares. I've never made any before myself, but they're really tasty."
