He was greatly interested in what this ball was to consist of. He knew he shouldn't expect anything so extravagant as the gathering that had been prepared for him when he was to choose for himself a maiden to wed, and it was the only particular festivity he could recall thus far. It didn't matter ( ... )

At Pent's side, Louise was positively glowing with delight and excitement. The park's transformation was breathtaking, and she took in all the sights with her usual bright smile. She had chosen a traditional yukata to wear, as had many others that she could see. The clothing was different, but she had gotten used to it quickly, and was happy she had purchased it when she and Fate had gone shopping.

"Oh, it's so beautiful!" She beamed up at him as she wrapped her arm closer around his. "You flatter me as always, Lord Pent. Truly I'm the luckiest woman here, for you are with me."

"I would not be here otherwise, dearest. So long as you are beside me, we could be anywhere." He smiled at her, tilting his chin to kiss her forehead. "And I'm not sure how many times I've said so already, but it's amazing how radiant you can be even in such foreign attire. I admit, I feel a little mismatched standing beside you!"

And still he smiled, resting a hand over one of her's and squeezing it lightly. "I wonder if Erk has arrived already. I very much would like to meet the person he'd asked to accompany him."

"It would be cruel indeed to deny so many people your wonderful presence, milord." She leaned closer to him as he kissed her forehead, her smile growing brighter. "Please, you need not worry about feeling mismatched! I merely saw this when Lady Fate and I were shopping, and it caught my eye. I'm so happy that you like it!"

So Erk had found a date after all? Louise was relieved to hear it, but at the same time she was mildly saddened that he hadn't informed her of this. She supposed it was only fair after she had pressed him, but it didn't change the fact that she wished he felt comfortable enough to talk to her about such things. "Do you know who he asked? The last I heard, he had been turned down many times..."

Pent laughed at that. That would be a thing to be said for whatever functions he must have had to go through in Reglay, but he could not recall any but the one. He brushed aside the memory for the moment. "It certainly fits you. I do like it very much, but not so much as the beauty that wears it."

By the look that touched Louise's face, it was obvious that Erk hadn't mentioned that he was coming with someone. "Oh, mentioned a Lady Saber? Did he not tell you..? Ah, but he didn't tell me that he was turned down before..." He smiled reassuringly at her. "Well, he did say he would introduce us here since he claimed to be busy previously- or do you already know who the lucky young lady is?"

"I'm just happy that I please you, milord." She smiled fondly at him. "Also that you asked me to attend with you. I felt it would be improper to just assume that you would want to have me along with you." She realized that her words sounded silly, especially when she was with Pent like this, but she felt it was best to be honest - how else would he know what she was thinking?

Louise shook her head a bit at the name. "No, I've not met a Lady Saber, or heard Erk talk about her." It seemed that Erk felt more comfortable talking to his father than his mother... and she knew that she hadn't helped matters by pressuring him. She decided to try and back off, even if her mothering instincts protested. "I would very much like to meet her. We'll have to seek them out!"

"Ah, Louise... There is no one but you whom I would prefer to be with, but I'll tell you this as many times as you would like," he replied.

Pent smiled encouragingly, giving a nod at the proposal. "Yes, indeed we must! I admit- I didn't have any idea of it either until I had asked, and you know how late I realized about the ball to begin with," he chuckled. Lifting his head, he scanned the crowds again. "Hm, do you see him, dearest?"

"I'd never get tired of hearing it, Lord Pent. And each time it only makes my heart soar higher!"

She scanned the crowd, looking for Erk and anyone else she might know. "There are so many people here, it's hard to tell. I'm sure we'll find him at some point, though!"

The sage appeared to have about as much luck as she did as he glanced around. "Well, we could always shout for him, although I doubt he would approve of that method very much!" he grinned almost mischievously.

Louise laughed softly. "I don't think he would be very happy with us if we did that, indeed." Still, the idea was tempting. Erk was always so serious; wouldn't it be best to try and awaken his sense of humor?

"However, if you'd like to try, by all means!"

Oh, by the look on his face, he really did want to try! It wasn't as though he wanted to mortify his poor son by attracting such attention- or perhaps maybe he did, in some way- but regardless, the option did seem fairly practical. After all, it would take them forever to go through the entire crowd, and in a place like Memento, violet hair was not that unusual a color to stick out.

Smiling at Louise, Pent then cupped his free hand to his mouth and took a deep breath.

"My pardon for the interruption! Erk! Are you present?! Your mother and I would very much like to greet you and your companion for the evening!"

As portions of the ball went silent at the unusual announcement, a very familiar exasperated sigh echoed out not too far away. Erk was never too pleased to have attention called to himself so easily.

And yet it never was his choice. "Saber, would you care to join me?"

"He expressed a desire to meet me; I see no reason to deny him of this." Saber stood up.

Louise couldn't help laughing as Pent's announcement bounced around the suddenly silent crowd. She placed a hand over her mouth, trying to muffle the laughter, but that didn't work very well. "Oh, Lord Pent...!" She shook her head gently. "He'll be very upset with us, I fear!"

It was effective! Pent hadn't expected to catch so many people's attention, but he thought he heard a familiar sigh just then! He smiled down at Louise. "Ah, he knows we mean well! And he did say, after all- so I think this as doing us all a favor." ...unless of course, Erk decided to make a run for it and hide from the embarassment, but he wouldn't do that!

Serra had taught Erk one crucial point - running from the embarassment only prolongs it.

As he approached, he stilled yet another sigh bubbling up in him. "Lord Pent, there were many other ways to achieve that goal. Quieter ways as well."

Taking another deep breath, he added, "Lord Pent, this is Saber, my accompaniment for the night. Saber, my father, Lord Pent."
