Lenalee was having a good day, until all this started. First Eve had run off, and then...then he showed up, out of nowhere, and Yuu...and now Ranulf was making her worry.

Speaking of Ranulf, that's where she was headed. She knew the cat-eared man lived in Serra's room, so he wouldn't be too hard to catch. There was also the fact that his hair was blue and he wore an almost absurd amount of orange.

"Ranulf!" She spotted him heading out of the apartments, running to catch up to him with a frown on her face.

Well, oops.

Ranulf stopped, his usual grin on his face, trying not to appear suspicious. He had thought for a moment to pretend not to hear her, or just that he wasn't him, but neither of those seemed very likely. He was quite hard to miss, and it would be troublesome if he mentioned his "awesome" hearing later on.

The only choice left, of course, was to appear as casual as he could.

"Hey, Lenalee! Going somewhere on this fine day?"

He failed to realize that, at least to Lenalee, he was already suspicious. She caught up to him, not losing the frown, and just looked at him for a while.

"I'm going where you're going." And there would be no arguments. "It must be important, for you to take off like that and not want to tell anyone."

"I'm... just going on a walk!" Ranulf grinned again, giving a casual shrug, trying to judge the distance between himself and the door, wondering if he could run off before her.

...Of course, he could use some help. His stomach was killing him, and two sets of eyes were better than one, right?

"Actually..." With a sigh, Ranulf pulled her aside, lowering his voice. "I'm going to look for kit--Eve. She really disappeared."

"I know she said she needed to leave..." Lenalee bit her lower lip, looking away from Ranulf. "I hope...something hasn't happened to her. I want to help you look."

She pulled her coat closed and buttoned it. "Do you know where she went?" It was cold, and the world was still a sugary mess. If Eve really wanted to hide somewhere...she would be hard to find.

"I think I can find out." Ranulf gave another casual shrug, this time dropping his smiling act with a small grimace, vowing that he was never touching any weird food ever again, whether a cute little girl offered it or not. Well. Except Eve's chocolates. He had to eat those. And learn to make them--

He was pretty sure he was going to be completely sick of chocolate before long, not that he wasn't already sick, quite literally.

But this wasn't about chocolate. This was about Eve, and the sooner he found her, the sooner he could go back to his nap, and to wishing his stomach ache would just disappear. Tsuna's clothes, after all, were far more comfortable than one would think.

"I can't really tell which scent's hers with this many people, but it should be easier outside."

"You can find her by scent?" Lenalee supposed she shouldn't have been surprised, really. Animals had better senses of smell than humans did.

Something about Ranulf's expression was off now, too. It wasn't just that he had stopped smiling. "...You still don't feel well, do you." She doubted it mattered to him in the face of finding Eve, though.

"Of course." Ranulf grinned despite his pain. "I'm a cat."

There really was no "of course" to it; he doubted anyone other than Serra believed his little claim. He knew it was true, however, but... that was no reason to make them think he wasn't joking. No one wise ever revealed his whole hand, did he?

Still... that didn't mean he had to hide everything. Lenalee, he could feel, was relatively trustworthy as far as beorcs -- and immediately, he'd already started using that word -- went.

"Guess not. Just don't tell the dear Lady Serra and we're all good, right?"

"I don't really talk to Serra." And that ended it. She was learning that there could be just as much in what you didn't say as in what you did.

She headed outside, looking around almost self-consciously. Maybe she expected to see Eve somewhere, returning from wherever she'd gone or just...around.

"Well then, where do we go from here?"

"Well." Ranulf stopped, making a great show of sniffing the air. Now that they were outside, he'd just have to separate out one scent from the rest.

...Easier said than done. He was a cat, after all, not a dog. And everything smelled like sugar. And people.

"We should ask around town first and get a general direction. Someone must have seen her."

"All right. ...Say something if you need a break."

That was all she would say about him still feeling sick. She got the feeling Ranulf didn't want or need someone to make an issue out of it.

She also had no idea who to ask; truth be told, she didn't know that many people around here, and certainly not people who knew Eve also.

"Sure thing." Ranulf grinned, in all appearances back to his old self, cheerful and insufferable. Spotting a handful of people, he strolled over, calling out a greeting.

"Hey, any of you seen a little girl about this tall," he gestured with his hand, "with long blond hair? She probably looked a bit upset, too."

With a vague wave from one of the people, Ranulf shrugged and shot Lenalee a lopsided smile. "Well, at least we have a general idea, now."

"Yes." She was staring to worry. The indicated direction pointed them toward the forest. So far, this place seemed safe, and she had arrived in the forest originally...but she couldn't shake a sudden, rather new feeling that there could be danger there.

Actually, it was a feeling of potential danger everywhere. She did her best to shake it off, following Ranulf as he headed in the direction the person had given them.

"I hope she's all right."

"Kitten's tough." Despite his worry, Ranulf knew that Eve could take care of herself. He remembered her words, that it had felt natural to make blades with her arms, that there was blood on her hands. No, she was in no danger, at least not physically.

Whatever had happened since the last time he saw her, however, must have shaken something in her.

And--

"OUCH!" Ranulf found himself sprawled rather indignantly on the ground. Checking back, he could see a tiny rock that lay there innocently at him. Mumbling a few choice words under his breath, he scrambled up and continued as if nothing happened.

...Just with a limp.

"Right, onward!"

If he hadn't been sick, Lenalee would have had to hold back laughter. As it was, she just continued following him, already looking around for signs of Eve.

Even she could smell the overpowering scent of sweet things when they reached the forest. It was pretty sickening, and she was glad Ranulf couldn't taste the sugar in everything. He could still smell it, though, and she watched him a little more closely, in case it made him feel ill.

"...Eve? Are you...around here?" It couldn't hurt to start calling, right?

"Oh, kitten!" After tripping over a root -- he could swear he was normally more graceful than this -- Ranulf tried calling as well, hoping that it would bring Eve tothem instead of driving her to run farther away. "It's just us. You can come out, you know?"

At least the environment was nicer. Ranulf liked the trees, knew how to move through them quickly and efficiently. He liked the smells, the scents of... well, actually, just sugar, but at least the absence of an overpowering amount of metal.

--And one young female who was not Lenalee.

"This way." He certainly hoped he was right.
