Two days in a row of Ben and RayK! Be still my heart! I didn't plan it this way, I assure you, but I was casting around pretty desperately yesterday for something that would take away the lingering sting of "Kowalski Is Bleeding" and I found this in my old bookmarks still waiting to be read and, oh my god, did it ever just shoot to the top of my favorites list. Damn.
Set post-COTW but during The Adventure, this is Ray and Fraser stopping off in a no-name town to recharge a bit, have an actual drink in an actual bar, maybe sleep someplace with solid walls. Only things don't quite go as planned, least not for RayK, and Fraser has to step in and help to patch him up a little and then things get interesting because Ray's been having "thoughts" and Fraser notices something of those thoughts, and... well. As you do.
More squeeing under the cut. I can't decide if it's spoilery or not, so beware. (NB- It probably is)
Gods, I loved this one so much.

The thing that gets me about this one is that it all takes place during one single night. The whole of a transition from friends to something else, a move that in your average romance novel takes months here takes only a few hours and this, I realized while reading, is one of those elements that seem to be common to all my favorite fics. Whether it's because the players are pressed for time or (like here) there just doesn't seem to be anything holding them back, I love it when people just go for it.
There's more to it than this here, though. Fantastically hot (the porn made me cry! in a good way! ffs) and beautifully paced, incredibly intimate, joyous and just all-around a fantastic, emotionally fulfilling read. Take this one slowly and savor it. I plan a repeat reading now, every time I'm stuck someplace unpleasant. They're just... I love them here. I do. That whole talking-release conversation, the escalating touches, the blink-and-you'll-miss-it negotiation, the ENDING!
OK, just go read.
