[MIX] standing on the edge of nothing | playlist for spn_j2_bigbang

We had a bit of a challenge when it came to the music for Standing on the Edge of Nothing. From very early on, Jay introduced me to some of the music she listened to while writing. I fell in love with it entirely, and went off in search of more, in the process uncovering an entire universe of music lovers, writers and critics dedicated to restoring and preserving recorded music of the early 20th century. I've been a fan of blues music for many years now, but I'd never heard some of these early tracks, and they quickly became my playlist during the course of this project too.

The themes of some of the songs included below are reflected in parts of the story. There are protest blues here and traveling blues, love songs and songs of heartache, and even one very early queer-themed blues song. This playlist isn't a soundtrack for the story, so much as it is a small collection of historically significant music from the 1920's and 1930's that we wanted to share with you. We hope you'll download and enjoy it.

If you're interested in hearing more of this wonderful music, I have two major sources to recommend. For several dozen songs, curated by knowledgeable bloggers and complete with musical and historical perspective, have a listen to the Blues Music tag at funfunfunmedia.com. For thousands of public domain recordings from the era, across all manner of genres, nothing beats the Internet Archive but for the purposes of this project, I took serious advantage of the Blues tag in the 78 RPMs & Cylinder Recordings collection.
