It really and truly is! From the story to the soundtrack, it's just breathtaking. I can overlook the flaws in the combat system for a plot as compelling as this one was.
Of all the games I've played, I've yet to find one with a story I liked better. It's just so perfect, so "real," and told so well, and ... sigh. Plus I'm big on aesthetics, and the game really has it down in that department too. Really the only thing it's lacking is a combat system that's always functional as opposed to .. whenever it feels like it.
Absolutely, and you can tell so much care was taken to maintain that authentic 1930s feel -- and the fact that a female-lead survival horror game set in the 1930s even exists is amazing in and of itself.
So true! Though I will say that the game faltered in the horror aspect for me. It was terrifying in the beginning, walking up to the orphanage to see the girls beating the bloody sack & then the children watching you from the other side of the fence. But eventually.. it just kind of gave away. The game was really moody & atmospheric but it just didn't have much 'tension.' I don't really hold that against it though, it kind of goes with the progression of the story anyway.
They nailed the 'survival' aspect though ... I was never in an excess of health items. More often I found myself debating on whether or not I should risk having Brown find more or just make due with what I had. I appreciate that a lot more than ending a Silent Hill game with 20 health drinks and 200 bullets.
Yeah, I suppose calling it survival horror is pretty generous. Maybe more like survival unnerving? ;) There was just enough to keep you more aware than usual, but nothing that had you dreading what lurked around the corner out of fear; more like annoyance because the enemies could be a huge pain, especially if they were all clustered together.
I liked that too, although I admit I spent a huge chunk of time searching for and stocking up on health items from the mermaid fight onwards. But it definitely took away what little security you might've felt in having so much ammunition or restorative biscuits. You had to rely more on your with and so few games make you do that nowadays.
Same! I feel like I always realize/come across something new with each playthrough, and it's always rewarding to go through the game carefully and take in all the little details.

If only the gameplay wasn't 100% broken, then maybe more people could enjoy it.
